Two great athletes were groomed just miles apart. But on Wednesday, Carmelo Anthony and Michael Phelps were 6,944 miles from Baltimore when finally united -- two of America's golden hopes, two charms of Maryland's "Charm City." At the Olympic Village, the basketball player and the swimmer spent their first extensive time together, talking shop and taking snapshots. "This was my first chance to really interact with him," said the Nuggets all-star and a Team USA starting forward. "Just a good vibe." Phelps, of course, is in contention to win a record eight gold medals. Anthony is a star among all-stars on Team USA, aiming to win basketball gold for the first time since 2000.

And they are officially out of news...

August 9, 2008  11:43 AM ET

Carmelo is actually doing well as a National team player rather than a Nugget. Why not make him as mainstay? Jerry C. asks guys for a 3 year commitment. 'Melo could be available longer than that. Haha!

August 9, 2008  07:56 PM ET

Bodymore, Murderland!!!

Nah just kidding. It's kind of cool that two hometown boys can chill out together at the Olympics.

August 9, 2008  09:51 PM ET

Wow these guy r like normal people and know how the make freinds. What's next they have the pay ther taxes too! Wright about somethnig that matters. Who cares!

August 10, 2008  04:35 AM ET

Of course it's news. Phelps could be a good influence on Melo, and could teach him how to become a real athlete and how to act like a mature adult.

August 10, 2008  08:12 AM ET

A wasn't it Phelps who got in trouble for drinking not to long agao JAY L? Don't think he would be a good influence on Melo!

August 10, 2008  09:50 AM ET

" Anthony is a star among all-stars on Team USA"

is he really ?
his current 'rep' is that of a selfish whiner.....
He's got offensive abilities- No Question....
but if it were my team...out of all the NBA'ers on team USA-
I'd rather have him ONLY over kidd, Redd & maybe Prince & boozer

So he ISN'T a star of stars

August 10, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Why would you want him over those four guys? Carmelo hasn't proven anything yet except that he's an arsehole. He plays absolutely no defense, he's the most selfish, self-centered player on this team and in the NBA (minus Starbury). He will never accomplish the NBA championship with his current attitude. At least one of the four you mentioned already has!

August 10, 2008  06:29 PM ET

kidds career is basically over- is a HOF'er- but not top tier anymore
Redd is only a shooter-

As for the other 2 that I mentioned- lets give melo SOME credit for scoring 25 a night.....you don't just find those type of players.,,,,,
I'm not saying he's significantly better than both prince & boozer-
I think he's a little better

August 11, 2008  12:02 AM ET

Point taken! Good offensive player, horrible defensive player! Actually, I'd rather have Prince or Boozer because of the other things they bring.

August 11, 2008  12:39 AM ET

This is so gay.

August 11, 2008  12:44 AM ET

Over the slots of Carmelo and Kidd, they could have used Amare Stoudemire and Stephen Jackson (yes, the crazy Captain Jack). Amare is strong and really scary. While Stephen Jackson can hit the 3 with ease. And he is scary, too. Boozer doesn't look like he fits in with team because he is a big man without D. Since they'd have Stoudemire, maybe they could have just used Tyson Chandler instead of Boozer.

You're way off base here. Consider the following:
- Phelps had a drinking incident AFTER he returned from the Olympics in Athens 4 years ago. He has never had a drink during any swimming competition or meet. In contrast, Carmelo has gotten into trouble for drinking and driving around at odd hours of the night just before the playoffs.
- Phelps was an 18 year old teenager who made a single mistake. It was a growing experience. He faced up to it with honesty and grace and put it behind him. Carmelo is in his 20's and is no longer a teenager, yet continues to have "incidents".
- Phelps has far surpassed Melo in terms of athletic accomplishments. He is now the greatest swimmer of all time. In basketball terms, that's a level only Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, Magic, Bird, or Kobe can claim to have reached.
- Phelps will obtain a university degree from the University of Michigan while simultaneously fulfilling his obligations as a professional athlete. Melo does not have a college degree, having left early to join the NBA.
---------------------------------
In short, Melo has much to learn from Phelps.
