Will Heat lose D-Wade to Greece?

First, Heat fans have had to wonder about Dwyane Wade's hometown Chicago Bulls luring him away in two years when his contract expires. Now, Greece? Here was the question that came from a Greek reporter: Would Wade think of playing in Greece if he received a deal like the rumored one revolving LeBron James for $50 million a year? "Oh, yeah," he says. Has anyone contacted him? "No, no, no," he says. "I'm happy with the Heat. But we've been joking with LeBron about that. The numbers talk, no question about it." It was eye-opening for Wade to see Atlanta Hawk Josh Childress sign recently with a Greek team for three years and $32.5 million. That suggested something in the game is tilting, some residue from the past couple of decades of building up the international game. "Look, a lot of guys like me got the [maximum contracts]," Wade said. "But the way his deal is structured Josh is making just about the same as I am after taxes. If LeBron can make what's being thrown around, that's crazy. "We never thought we'd be in a position like this, but we'll see what's going to happen in the next several years."

Here we go again...

August 9, 2008  11:07 AM ET

Getting tired of these so-called "news"

August 9, 2008  11:17 AM ET

i'm from europe and i can't stand this guy, so please don't send him over here!

August 9, 2008  11:24 AM ET

Sorry, Skip, but I don't think the opinion of one European will matter much in the grand scheme of things since a lot of people where you are like him.

But, seriously, it seems like every day we hear about another rumored move that a Euro team will make on an NBA superstar. Either report it when they make the move or don't report it at all.

August 9, 2008  11:27 AM ET

NBA would turn to crap if all our stars went over to Europe, hopefully this wont happen

August 9, 2008  11:37 AM ET

This is all about leverage.

D-Wade is a notch below Kobe and LeBron in terms of international superstardom.
He won't get $50M.

Europe needs talent (which he has) AND GLOBAL marketability (which he may still have to develop)

August 9, 2008  11:39 AM ET

its bad enough when franchise players ditch a team for money when their contracts are up. but if a player runs off to europe to play in some BS league i have no interest in, than i will not be supporting that player when they come back to the NBA a year later. what can u buy with 50 mil that u cant buy with 20 mil? is money really that important to leave the country and play for people that didnt support you nearly as much as hometown fans?

August 9, 2008  11:46 AM ET

Stephon Marbury is going to Italy (Milan) and he owes them 20 mil over two years.

Good point... Buy I beg to disagree on 1 thing. It's $50M a year. In a 4 year contract, we would actually be comparing $200M versus $80M. That would be very significant.

August 9, 2008  12:04 PM ET

europe wants a champions league version of basketball. this is how they are pitching the idea. why are people getting offended by someone being properly compensated for their job? they (kobe, lebron, wade) are just basketball players and they dont owe us anything. let them go make money, live good lives, and be just as entertaining. not like we wouldnt be able to follow them

August 9, 2008  12:36 PM ET

this is what the NBA gets for for having corrupt refs that fix games

August 9, 2008  12:44 PM ET

Has the dollar fallen this badly?

August 9, 2008  12:45 PM ET

not really, just euro so stable and strong. 70 cents gained on the dollar since 02... the pound compared to the dollar hasn't seen much impact

August 9, 2008  01:01 PM ET

I can only hope that D-Wade stays in the NBA and signs with the Bulls (Bit of wishful thinking). Sure you can make insane amounts of money in Europe but there's no way you will be playing the same type of competition over there than here. Sure the international teams do well during the olympics and world championships but lets face it, they don't have superstars with the likes of D-Wade or Kobe, etc. As a guy from Chicago, I hope he doesn't make the move overseas and I don't think he will either.

August 9, 2008  01:16 PM ET

David Stern, you're league is in flames and going down faster than Madonna on AROD.

August 9, 2008  01:18 PM ET

is money really that important to leave the country and play for people that didnt support you nearly as much as hometown fans?
IanSMK | 08/09/08, 11:39 AM

YES! Where have you been for the last 10-20 years of professional sports?

August 9, 2008  01:21 PM ET

After the palace brawl does anybody really think these players care about fans and their support not, they don't care about fans just our money

August 9, 2008  01:24 PM ET

IanSMK, I get what you're saying, but what guy in their right mind would turn down 50 million tax-free Euros that are worth much more than American money?

And it's not like we wouldn't be able to watch our favorite players play either. ESPN and ABC would surely bring us the games from overseas if some superstars went.

August 9, 2008  01:25 PM ET

ok this is getting rediculous ok stop it with all this top 5 nba stars going 2 europe Wade is not going any where stop it now!

August 9, 2008  01:44 PM ET

It appears that we're going to be bombarded with these stories for the next 3 years. Or until it's determined that these guys aren't going anywhere. All this is, is fodder for talk forums and ESPN. Wade, Lebron, and no other top tier player is going overseas. However, it could push salaries through the roof. In 3 years, it will still be that 6th, 7th, and 8th man on the roster that stands to profit financially from the European contract.
