Tortorella won't coach Islanders

Former Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella, who was viewed by many as the most high-profile and possibly most high-priced candidate for the Islanders' head-coaching vacancy, apparently is out of the mix. Money isn't a major issue for Isles owner Charles Wang, but there always was a question whether Tortorella and a team committed to long-term development plan were the right fit for each other. Islanders general manager Garth Snow is expected to sharply narrow his long list of candidates over the weekend and reach a decision on a successor to Ted Nolan early next week, an NHL source said.

You can't be too careful. Can't have a coach that has a bigger name than any player on the team.
Other thoughts...I'll bet Garth SNOW made a lot of snow angels when he was a boy...And Charles WANG spent a lot of time...

Me thinks the current Providence Bruins coach will be the next Islander's coach !!!

Trotts has to be named coach at this point

With the dumb outfit running the Islanders and John Tortorella's personality, he would last about half as long as Neil Smith did as their GM!

I'm telling you, they're hiring Elmo! Either him or Winnie the Pooh.

NOBODY will coach the Islanders... Maybe Snow could hire Kevin Weekes. The Devils don't need him to back up Brodeur, and it's ALWAYS a good idea to hire a backup goaltender to a front office or coaching position before they retire.

I've got the Isles over the Panthers in 6 games in the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals. Is there even any doubt? Okay...maybe five games.

August 9, 2008  03:33 PM ET

YODA, I'm assuming that was all sarcasm, but they're in the same conference.

Don't worry Johnny. Sometimes, not coaching (The Islanders) is way better than coaching. Expect a job by January once a current coach gets fired!

I will take the job !!! I haven't played since college - many, many years ago I am bi-lingual English/French I have had over 250 stiches and I don't give a sheet if they fire next month !!!

One mistake - sorry !!! Stitches . I hope this doesn't take me out of the running !!!

John Tortorella is not a dumb man.

Ipso fatso he will not coach the Islanders.

No brainer.

This isn't news. Was it ever a possibility. Only someone desperate will take that job, or someone whose current position is so far beneath this one that they think it might benefit them no matter one - in effect, another type of desperation.
