Pennington to start for Dolphins

The Dolphins' quarterback competition came to an abrupt conclusion late Friday night, and none of the three candidates currently in training camp will win the starting job. Instead, Miami has agreed to a two-year deal with former Jets quarterback Chad Pennington, an agreement that will bring the former AFC East rival into town as the unspoken starter, two sources said. Pennington can earn up to $11.5 million over the course of the contract. His arrival also will mean the end in Miami for either Josh McCown or John Beck, two quarterbacks who have been unable to impress the coaching staff during training camp. Given Beck's inexperience, the Dolphins are more likely to keep him (if they can't find a trade suitor) because the team still wants to see what he develops into. Rookie Chad Henne, who was picked with a second-round selection in this year's draft, has been the only quarterback to impress the team's decision-makers at this point. Pennington is coming to the Dolphins with the understanding he will start, one source said.

lol@jets. nice move giving one of your oldest rivals a starting qb for free.

"''It looked like a strong opportunity,'' Condon said. ``He's had a good deal of success in this division.''

That must have been some old film he was looking at.
Regardless, he is an upgrade.

Good luck, Chad.

August 9, 2008  08:45 AM ET

Dolphins receivers will now learn to master the ten and out. Chad cannot throw much beyond that.

August 9, 2008  08:57 AM ET

He definitely starts. Plus, don't worry about the arm. He will get that ball on the deep route to Ted Ginn Jr. It may wobble getting there, but it will get there.

Parcells always loves to bring in his old guys - stiff, immobile, weak quarterbacks.

11 million? I remember when Marino was dubbed "The 5 Million Dollar Man"
Everybody loves Chad because his Marshall teammates had to carry him down the field, oh wait that was Leftwhich. why does every one love Chad again? Oh that's right, because he is so smart. Much like Bernie Kosar when the Dolphins signed him. Yikes!!!
Isn't Pennington just a sober version of Brian Greise? High completion percentage on his 3-yard passes.

Opportunity knocks! They guy is 32, Chad will be O.K. in a 2 year deal.
Same here, Good Luck Chad!!!
Jets made a big mistake on fantasy QB, count on it.

August 9, 2008  10:07 AM ET

those other guys need patience, the dolphins have a offensive line with lots of hole and Pennington is not the most durable. they will get playing time. Good luck chad.

August 9, 2008  10:11 AM ET

With the warm Miami weather and the even warmer Tuna Chad will increase his throwing distance by at least 3 yards - that's a fact !!!

August 9, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Parcells is an idiot, Pennington isn't a starting QB anymore to me, they should have just went with Henne to see what he can do because obviously they won't win in 2008.

August 9, 2008  10:45 AM ET

I hope he does well..That is all..

Did you take a MEAN PILL today ???

August 9, 2008  11:22 AM ET

He'll start until he gets hurt. Like every year.

In that case, I hope you're no one of THOSE parents who see $$$$ because their kids are good at sports.

Must be tough to have your shortcomings aired out nationally due to no fault of your own.....guess it comes with the territory. In a sense look at the turmoil caused in so many camps by Brat Favre's little tantrum this summer! HOF player or not, the wiser camps steered clear. I still hold out Testeverde and Bledsoe--two failed experiments in Dallas using "good" (not great) QBs who were in the sunset years.

no kidding. Pennington just isn't a starting QB anymore with those two rotator cuff injuries....It's too bad too, because he is a heck of a good quarterback, a leader.

how unsurprising.
