Five pitchers on Braves wish list

Now that the trading deadline is passed, free-agent shopping days aren't far off. The Braves have significant holes to fill this winter: in the outfield, where they need power, and the starting rotation, now that Tim Hudson will miss most of 2009 following elbow surgery. With $30-40 million to spend, here are five free-agent starters the Braves might add to their wish list: 1. LH CC Sabathia (Age 28; 2008 salary $11 million). 2. RH Ben Sheets (Age 30; 2008 salary $12.1 million). 3. RH Jon Garland (Age 28; 2008 salary $12 million). 4. RH Derek Lowe (Age 35; 2008 salary $10 million). 5. RH Ryan Dempster (Age 31; 2008 salary $7.3 million).

They can't afford any of them. The new owners are already positioning themselves to sell the team.

That's a nice shopping list, especially Sabathia, Sheets, and Dempster.

The Braves, in fact, have more ike $45-50M to spend..... and the owners are absentee, so Frank Wren has Carte Blanche to sign whoever he wants..... and has stated specifically that they are going to make a run at CC or Sheets..... However, the young Pitchers have done well..... but two pitcher signings via FA or trade would be nice, with at least one coming off this list..... the loss of Hudson was the real killer since he'll miss most of nexy year too....

Survey says: XXXXXX ..... you know nothing about the Braves so don't pretend that you do.....

If the Braves sign one, it will probably be Lowe or Garland. They'll get Hudson back, and the young guys like Campillo and Jurrjens have done a nice job. The Braves need another corner outfielder perhaps too.

I think Sheets would be a better for the Braves. They could get him a little cheaper than Sabathia and I think Sheets would be more willing to stick around than CC would. Charlie Morton is probably benefitting the most by being in the rotation the latter part of this season. Who are some of the minor league outfielders that could come up and do well?

August 9, 2008  12:41 PM ET

please no garland, mr. wren. push for CC and give him the Johan contract 8 yrs 150-160 million. they will have about 45 million coming off payroll so they can spend around 30 to 35 million. hampton, glavine, smoltz, and kotsay are all free agents. plus we already dropped tex's salary. with the other 15 million or so to spend, maybe a short term deal for a slugger like adam dunn or pat burrell. however if you go after those guys only a 2 or 3 year deal otherwise no chance to spend again until chipper retires

Yanks will sign 2 of the above pitchers...guarantee it!

August 9, 2008  02:10 PM ET

Carl Pavano on this list yet?

August 9, 2008  03:03 PM ET

30-40 mil for the season or for the whole contract? If it is for the season, Atlanta has a shot at maybe 2 of those pitchers, but the market is going to be crazy this year. Well, crazier than usual.

August 9, 2008  03:08 PM ET

If Sabathia keeps pitching as hot as he presently is doing for the Brewers for the remainder of the season there will be all kinds of teams pursuing him next year & the Braves will probably be outbid. None the less I hope they pull out all the stops & pursue every individual on the list. Jurrjens is a definite keeper & Campillo the bright spot of a dismal season. Hope to see both in next years rotation. Morton needs to go.

I expect the Cubs to resign Dempster. The Cardinals have almost 25 million coming off the books next year with Mulder, Izzy and Encarnacion. I expect them to make a run at Garland.

I don't think they'll be interested in Sheets (injury prone), Lowe (getting old for that big salary), or Sabathia (he's going to get more than Santana before this is over).

I think Colorado might be interested in them !!!

Braves will get none of them (too expensive), but will scour the DL for comeback-kid-type of pitchers ala Glavine, Hampton, etc for former (and cheaper) glory.

Considering the injury rate to Braves pitchers, we probably need more than 5! It is nice to have Gonzalez back and I enjoy watching Jurrgens and Campillo. But, just like last year, there's just not enough healthy, consistent pitchers.
