Injury clouds USC's QB picture

USC's quarterback situation for the season opener and possibly beyond became muddled Friday when starter Mark Sanchez suffered a dislocated left kneecap while warming up for practice. Sanchez, a fourth-year junior, threw a pass to teammate Clay Matthews, as he does every day before stretching exercises, but then crumpled to the ground. He will begin rehabilitation Monday and Coach Pete Carroll said the quarterback's status was day-to-day. Sanchez's uncertain status elevates sophomore transfer Mitch Mustain and redshirt freshman Aaron Corp to compete for the starting job. Both appeared a bit shaky in the immediate aftermath of Sanchez's injury before rallying and performing well during the second half of practice.

This could work out to their advantage.... many feel Mustain has bigger upside than Sanchez, who was not very impressive in his starts last year......

Mitch Mustain will be be more then adequate. He played fairly well for a true Freshmen in the SEC. I expect great things for him with the surrounding cast SC provides.

August 9, 2008  08:55 AM ET

Mitch Mustain can play. He just needed the opening.

August 9, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Dang it. I really wanted to see Sanchez lose it on the merit of his play. Now USC will probably win the National Title. UGGHHHH!!!!

August 9, 2008  10:47 AM ET

You hate to see something like this happen, but now we'll see if Mustain can live up to his recruiting hype.

August 9, 2008  11:26 AM ET

looks like an upset at UVA, Mustain will be rusty, with several int,s, My Trojans go down in the opener

August 9, 2008  12:11 PM ET

I always thought that Mustain waa better than Sanchez. On the other hand, I have sympathy for Sanchez and wish him well.

August 9, 2008  01:05 PM ET

I agree with most of the posters here about Mustain. You never want to see someone go out with an injury, but this could be a blessing in disguise for the Trojans.

Just curious... How are Ohio State fans feeling about this?

August 9, 2008  01:36 PM ET

I don???t know, I remember Mitch being kind of a crybaby at Arkansas. He wasn???t as good as his mamma thought he was.

what;s with the questions marks

August 9, 2008  01:38 PM ET

Sanchez looks like hes about to throw that ball like a little girl in that picture.

August 9, 2008  02:20 PM ET

Ahhh, the slow and painful decline of USC. It happens, time for a new dominator to emerge in Col. FB.

August 9, 2008  02:28 PM ET

Devo, I think we've passed the era of all-out domination of college ball. There's just too much talent and too many intangibles anymore.

August 9, 2008  02:37 PM ET

Oh Yea, Baby!

August 9, 2008  03:18 PM ET

HOPE THAT KNEE FEELS BETTER ON SEPT 13TH WHEN OHIO STATE COME TO TOWN... THE BUCKEYE DEFENSE IS GOING TO BREAK HIS LEG. FEAR THE VEST!

August 9, 2008  03:55 PM ET

looks like stanford can do it again!

August 9, 2008  04:14 PM ET

That was truly tacky 4vrRoyal. I bet your fellow Buckeyes are embarrassed to have you among them.

Anyhow wouldn't you rather defeat USC at their best instead of theoretically squeaking by a second string qb?

August 9, 2008  06:39 PM ET

Hey Yard bird, all I can remember are the two blowouts when USC played Arkansas......if you dont remember...I can send you the link so you can read up on it....

August 9, 2008  06:50 PM ET

DEVO (SPECTRE) - Decline? Arent USC going to start the season ranked #2? Please get your head out of your a** and read the newspapers. On a personal level, I think Mustain is better than Sanchez, the only reason why Sanchez has the first crack at the starting position is because he knows the system better and put his time behind Booty and Leinart. Also, Carroll said that although Mustain was 8-0 with Arkansas, he was working under a high school offense. Take note of that Yard bird. Keep Oklahoma in your rearview mirror.....Sam Bradford is very good!
