Clausen won't discuss web photos

The pictures splashed on the Internet, alleging underage drinking. The accompanying debate over appropriate behavior for a burgeoning team leader. The questions about whether he indeed learned a lesson after an alcohol-related scrape the year before. In a sense, Jimmy Clausen asked for it. "That's the one thing about being the quarterback at Notre Dame -- the spotlight is on you at all times," Clausen said Friday, as the Irish kicked off preseason camp. "That's why I came to Notre Dame. That's what I wanted." Surely, in reality, Clausen could have done without the hubbub over pictures of he and three teammates that appeared on the Web site The Big Lead on Monday, allegedly taken at something called "Beer Olympics," with Clausen and at least two other teammates not yet of legal drinking age. On Friday, the sophomore refused to discuss the pictures specifically, saying he was "moving forward." Irish coach Charlie Weis declined to discuss repercussions, if any.

What's to discuss...?

August 9, 2008  12:14 PM ET

This whole non-story is generated courtesy of your Chicago Tribune which wants desperately to find a story - and create controversy - as college football season approaches. There is nothing else to talk about in regard to ND. Sportswriters are stupid.

With cell phone cameras these days, every athlete on every team needs to watch what they do. It's just too easy for something to pop up on the web from a party,

Is there a problem here, a college kid had unsanction communion with friends and the local watering hole got the offering basket. I am not sure why this is even news. Leave the kid alone.

August 9, 2008  01:08 PM ET

Well, Shepiam, cause this kid is the QB at Notre Dame and he is to be held to a higher standard. If he doesn't want that pressure, he should have went to Duke or Vanderbilt.

Do all college kids drink? Most. Are all college kids the starting QB at Notre Dame? Nope.

If u want to party, by all means go ahead. Just hang up your helmet and be a regular student.

August 9, 2008  02:37 PM ET

It's called "guilt by association" and photos don't lie. Time to act your age Mr. Clausen, unless of course you really are 10 years old.

August 9, 2008  02:37 PM ET

Jayhawkfan....seriously, what are the repercussions of this going to be? None. He has pressure to be successful as a football player. If he sucks on the field, then he deserves to be criticized. Not because he likes to play beer pong.

There is no proof whatsoever that Clausen was drinking anything. I take it you (and DEVO) don't get much jury duty.

August 9, 2008  03:39 PM ET

They sure had a lot of quotes from him after claiming he would not discsuss it.

KRB

Knowing the Trib people, I would say because they keep hounding him and he feels pressured into responding. They won't let a story they've created die if they think they can get any further mileage out of it. Nothing - repeat: NOTHING - is going to happen to Jimmy.

August 9, 2008  03:50 PM ET

I would hope nothing happens to him unless they have evidence beyond a shadow of a doubt that he did something illegal. The Duke scandal type witch hunts are unacceptable.

August 9, 2008  04:37 PM ET

Yeah, I'm sure they were just drinking Apple Juice.

He could at least cut that hair.

Kids today don't have the hygeine you had back in the 30s, right jayhawkfan?

August 9, 2008  05:20 PM ET

Let's all be honest here.... even though he has lost the blow-out haircut, he's still an overhyped surfer boy from california... they MIGHT win 6 games this year.

August 9, 2008  06:52 PM ET

I worry more about his freekin hair and fashion sense (or lackthereof) than about him drinkin beer. The beer olympics thing actually makes me think the kid might have a chance to be more than an calidiot.

August 9, 2008  07:57 PM ET

Nothing to discuss. On a funny note: Can I participate in the Beer Olympics? I thought that was a cool idea.

August 9, 2008  07:58 PM ET

He needs a haircut though. He looks a little funny with that mini-mullet thing he's got.

August 9, 2008  09:44 PM ET

Wow a college kid was drinking and a college kid was taking pictures, Ho's this news?

Jayhawk football players wouldn't know what it's like to have people want to take their picture.

Well, thanks, because YOU said so I guess I don't have to watch this season.
By the way, do you know the Lotto #'s for Tuesday? (Mega Millions)
