Culpepper or Leftwich in Pittsburgh?

Daunte Culpepper or Byron Leftwich could be the new backup quarterback for the Steelers, who became vulnerable at the position Friday night when Charlie Batch was injured. Batch, who suffered a broken right collarbone in Friday's 16-10 exhibition victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, is expected to be out four to six weeks, according to coach Mike Tomlin. That leaves just two rookies -- fifth-round pick Dennis Dixon and undrafted free agent Mike Potts -- behind starter Ben Roethlisberger, who was sacked 93 times the past two years and takes more hits than almost any passer in the NFL.

thats tough but id go with the more mobile culpepper

August 10, 2008  09:20 AM ET

I would go with Culpepper. Leftwich didn't exactly impress in J-Ville which is why David Garrard is QB now at least Culpepper has some better skills.

August 10, 2008  09:36 AM ET

Dixon, if he has learned the system. Mobile Culpepper is an oxymoron...used to be true but the guy doesn't move half as well as he used to.

it does not matter how mobile or not these two are. if you can't read a defense and turn the ball over the team will still lose. there is a reason these two are unsigned, they don't have it any more.

That's it on the market? Damn, time to Pepper the Dolphin meat.

August 10, 2008  09:59 AM ET

I'd go with Denis Dixon. Nobody ever wants to give the young guys a chance - oh wait, didn't the Steelers start a rookie quarterback and win the Super Bowl a few years back?? Didn't the Patriots do it too?

August 10, 2008  10:02 AM ET

I thought it was going to say culpper to the dolphins lol

August 10, 2008  10:38 AM ET

let them fight it out in pre season may the better QB win

I agree Vaughn warning signs go up when the guy is not in another camp. Leftwich is as mobile as a tree, Culpepper getting there too. If one is signed they stick around maybe two months, get cut then audition with another team. Steelers are leaning toward Leftwich which will mean an unneccessary cap hit for their services. I just hope the O-line holds up bettert han it did last year because if not Leftwich will look like a tree holding up against a tropical storm in Bangladesh when the pass rush hits him.

August 10, 2008  10:48 AM ET

The entire O line had a collective butt whole pucker ... "If those are our choices for back up, we gotta keep Ben healthy!"

August 10, 2008  10:57 AM ET

Leftwich was already signed is what i heard this morning. I see him getting the start by game 5 with the way the Steelers line gives up sacks.

August 10, 2008  11:10 AM ET

What a dismal question for Steelers fans. I'd go with Leftwich I guess.

August 10, 2008  11:14 AM ET

The Steelers offensive line need to protect their QB..bottom line...

August 10, 2008  11:38 AM ET

If the O-line doesn't protect the QB, can he sue them for non-support?

August 10, 2008  12:02 PM ET

Great line, Belicat! Love the thumbnail, too...

Why the rush? (No pun intended.) Tampa Bay will have to unload about 40 quarterbacks before the season begins.

Hey Kumar.. Epic Fail!!!!

August 10, 2008  01:29 PM ET

neither

August 10, 2008  01:38 PM ET

The Steelers should go with Leftwich, he's taller, throws less INTs and makes better reads. If he can get comfortable throwing the Fade to Sweed. That could be a very productive play for the Steelers.
