Khabibulin destined for Kings?

During the introduction of goalie Cristobal Huet last week, Chicago GM Dale Tallon said he wouldn't have a problem retaining Nikolai Khabibulin to give the Blackhawks two veterans in net. Nice try. Together, the goalies stand to earn $12.375 million in 2008-09, a crippling 21.8 percent of the $56.7 million cap. It would be the most salary committed to the position by an NHL team, nearly $5 million more than the $7.6 million the Rangers (second-most dollars devoted to goal) have committed to Henrik Lundqvist and Stephen Valiquette. The logical landing spot for Khabibulin is Los Angeles, where GM Dean Lombardi desperately needs some experience to make sure his baby-faced defense doesn't crack under repeated beatings. Considering the Kings would be doing Chicago a favor by taking on Khabibulin's salary (the team's second-highest behind defenseman Brian Campbell's $7.1 million annual paycheck), it wouldn't take much for Lombardi to land the veteran netminder he needs.

That's a lot of money for a Bulin Wall that may be missing a few bricks of late.
Chicago definately needs to move that salary though. Still, there are several teams that are in the hunt for solid goal tending. That said, the Hawks have a great chance of making the post-season this year.

i can deff see this happening chicago would be crazy to keep both of them huets signing was the writing on the Bulin Wall that he was heading out of town only question was who was gone eat his salary and LA makes perfect sense
I agree Baun hawks look like they will be fighting for a playoff spot this year i though they had an outside chance last season and they should be better than last years team that only missed the playoffs by 4 points

id probably put keith in there before barker..barkers still a youngster and keith made the all star team mind you...and i know byfuglien is a forward primarily but he was a defensemen and thats who id place in place of barker...but he's getting there...

but trading khabi isnt a bad idea considering you also have corey crawford behind him at goalie as well.....he IS considered the future for us..and lets not forget the minor league system with Niemi in there too...i think he'll be a for sure stud in the goalie position...no doubt about it....

If Lombardi is *desperate*- then why does Tallon have to move Khabibulin again? Who cares if they have that much tied up in goaltending in Chicago- it is*after all* only for one season.

Look BG- if you are a GM and know that another GM is desperate -especially for salary- and you know you can shift around afew pieces yourself - is there actually any need to just dump salary when you can actually afford to wait?

Personally they might want to stick to reporting about the Bruins at the BG - since apparently they can't figure the situation in Chicago out... and it is pretty simple really--- none of the 3 high dollar free agents that Chicago has is signed after this season meaning they are instantly under the cap for next season -- does nothing for this season- sure- but you know you might expect a "journalist" to maybe try and figure out about how far over the cap Chicago is -- and it doesn't appear to be all that much...

but the fact is - that it is far from desperate in Chi-Town and in LA it seems like Lombardi is about 12 or 13 mil away from the salary floor -and if LA wants goaltending -then they have to be prepared to pay -and probably not in draft choices- since Chicago has all of their's for the 2009 draft -because Chicago is in a position where they don't necessarily have to trade Khabi- so BG reporter guy - what GM *would* you rather be at this moment?

I'll take Chicago's position any day.

I like the depth of what you're saying S. Cross, but LA is not going to give up it's youth for Khabi. They've been too adamant about it. The most I see them giving up is P. O'Sullvan because they can fill his role and he has a ton of potential. rough. LA has quite a few goalies that are developing so they may just suck it up for another year and pass on this one.

the salary is not a problem..... half the team is still under entry level contracts.... they could eat niks contract this year without a problem and not resign him next year(i believe his contract is up)... i think tallon just wants to get another young player for nik instead of lose him next year.... in a few years chicago will go through the same thing as pittsburgh... have to start paying big to keep the talent they have.... and they have lots.

Whatever happens, I would love to see the rise of the Blackhawks again! Someone needs to give some of those western teams a run for their money. For starters, Chicago must atleast win the Winter Classic this year, which right now does not look very likely....

LA shouldn't take on that salary. They should start Bernier and be a bottom-feeder with a future instead of a bottom feeder with an old, expensive goalie.

August 10, 2008  09:23 PM ET

I think this all depends on Chicago. Really, what do they need? They don't need any scoring forwards; they should be set on defense; maybe some 3rd or 4th liners? They'll only trade him if they don't want to pay him. The Kings won't give up a high draft pick for him, and they're not going to get rid of their young players. They have Bernier as their future goalie; It will be interesting to see if they think he's close enough to being ready to have him play this year. I see Derek Armstrong or Kyle Calder as a possible move, but I don't know if the Hawks need either one of them.

That's nice - no more hockey stories !!! Savvy ???

August 11, 2008  03:39 AM ET

You guys know that LA's millions below the salary floor, right?

August 11, 2008  05:41 AM ET

I still think Chicago holds onto Bulin until close to the trade line. Then some team with a chump in the net (aka Ottawa) will trade after a bunch of draft picks to bring in Bhuli thinking it will help. It won't be the right move but Ottawa fans got so close to the Cup for 2 years before shanking it last yr and the fans now have high expectations. There will be a couple of other teams looking for goaltending around the same time - or an elite goalie may get injured. Chicago has the luxury of time.

What this article fails to address is the fact LA is the one who needs to add salary to get to the salary cap floor. This gives the advantage to Chicago, since LA has to make a move, whereas Chicago can bide their time. LA will probably have to pay through the nose for him.

August 11, 2008  09:23 AM ET

LA shouldn't take on that salary. They should start Bernier and be a bottom-feeder with a future instead of a bottom feeder with an old, expensive goalie.

I agree with this philosophy. As a Ranger fan, it's something I've merely heard about, this building an organisation thingy, till recently

BETTMAN S***S

The only reason LA would take Khabi is because of the salary floor. No up side otherwise.
LA's only other option is to overpay for a bunch of players that most other teams are not considering re-signing.

Couldn't they just sign their GM to a one year, $20,000,000 contract?
