Do Canadiens really need Sundin?

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Mats Sundin, the Canadiens are still thought to be in the mix for the big Swedish centerman if he decides to continue his NHL career this fall. However, the Canadiens may be in better shape if they don't land Sundin, considering the number of big-time contracts GM Bob Gainey will be scheduled to negotiate next summer. Currently scheduled to hit the market: top-line right wing Alex Kovalev, captain Saku Koivu, sniper Alex Tanguay, shutdown D-man Mike Komisarek, forward/defenseman Mathieu Dandenault, and valuable core guys Steve Begin, Tom Kostopoulos, and Francis Bouillon.

What's to worry about?
Even if the Egghead were to play...he is only capable of making a one season commitment and then takes another 4 months to listen to his body to tell him what to do next....Heck, haven't you heard?
He is just now, "considering" putting on his skates.
Hahahahahahahaha-Hahahahahahahahaha

I am sick of all the Sundin gab as everyone else...

However, he would be exactly what the Habs need... a big, puck-controlling pivot who can outmuscle defencemen in the offensive zone.

They have Pleckanec and Koivu.. two talented bu tiny pivots, and a checking line.
Sundin would improve a great powerplay and be partnered with Kovalev, another powerhouse on the puck to form a deadly down-low combination.

I don't buy this at all. There's no denying that Sundin would be a huge boost to the Habs, and Gainey has already shown that the players have a commitment to staying with a winning organization.

Compare the contract A. Kostitsyn signed this year (15 mill over the next 3 seasons) to other players around the league and you've got a perfect example. The young stars such as Komisarek love playing in Montreal and they're treated like royalty there. Of course we'll lose a UFA here and there, but generally they'll stick around if we keep winning.

Furthermore, say what you will about Bouillon, Kostopoulos, and Begin, but they won't be missed too much when they leave, and that's thanks to the drafting of the organization. Steve Begin and Dandenault are definitely on the way out in Montreal as we've already got players to replace them, and there's tons of talent down the line to replace Bouillon on defence with McDonagh, Fisher, Valentenko, Carle, Belle, etc... waiting in the wings.

As for Kovy leaving for the KHL... not gonna happen. HIs son is enrolled at school in Montreal and loves it, and Alex loves life in THE hockey city.

So all in all, we're in good shape with or without Sundin

Yes if the Habs aquired Sundin for their "centennial" year i would be a bit more hesitant to hit the bell Centre donned in Black and Gold. But I dont think it will happen...fortunately.

Mats is still a great player but this one year contract stuff is getting obvious. To go to Montreal would make him a traitor I don't think he could live with that on his bio. He loves Toronto and knows what going to Montreal would do to his good guy rep. If he goes its Vancouver.

To be truthful I think Sundin would help any team he chose to sign with. Habs were not good enough last year and won't be this year either. Sundin would help them quite a bit though.

Solorunner - Agreed!

To much to risk jumping ship to play w/ the Habs. He goes else where.

Good guy reps went out the window with free agency, The only way to stay a good guy is to go nowhere.

Anywhere but the team that brung ya is mercenary to me.

If he chooses Hongcover it is definitely for the cash and a silly decision.

He should be thinking Cup in his twilight years.

He should go to Detroit for $1 million.

$1,000,000, $500,000, either way he should go there for tips and gratuities, He has more than enough $$ and he would lose all kind of face if he went to Hongcouver strictly for the cash.

It's going to take more than the $6 Million the Habs are offering Sundin to hold on to some of the players mentioned in the article, although, for my money, I would only pursue the two Alexes, and Komisarek. I believe the Habs gave up too early on Mike Hainsey, and shouldn't make the same mistake with Komisarek. The others (including Koivu) can walk.
