Ravens players want Smith at QB

One of the undercurrents felt from the Ravens' visit to Gillette Stadium was the support in the team's locker room for Troy Smith to be the team's starting quarterback on opening day. Linebacker Ray Lewis, in particular, is privately lobbying for Smith - the former Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State - to take the reins over Kyle Boller and 2008 first-round draft choice Joe Flacco.

That's because they know that Smith is the better player of the other two options. Give him a chance.

they allready know what Boller gives them see what the kid has.

August 10, 2008  09:57 AM ET

...and so it begins, the team virus known as "(I) we want this guy."

August 10, 2008  10:02 AM ET

That's because in the game that we saw Troy play, he did more in 4 minutes than Kyle Boller did all season.

Also, I was in the Delaware/Maryland area for work last season and got a chance to see Joe Flacco play. I don't know where all the hype came from, because I was not at all impressed. I understand I'm simply an observer, not a professional scout or anything, but Flacco didn't show anything that would make me think "wow!" and they were playing against a D-IAA school.

He is not tall enough to be successful in the pros....play him, lose with him, figure it out for yourselves. great college player.....just won't happen on this level

August 10, 2008  10:34 AM ET

Doug Flutie wasn't very tall either and he did pretty well for himself. Give the guy a chance.

August 10, 2008  10:37 AM ET

Well, they did turn the team over to Lewis years ago, so if that is what he wants, then that will be it...Billick is probably laughing his butt off right now..

August 10, 2008  10:43 AM ET

Boller and Flacco better watch out. Ray Ray may have them both knifed so Smith can start.

August 10, 2008  11:18 AM ET

I agree with C-smith..I didn't see the hype with Flacco either....Troy Smith should be given a chance to prove himself...

Hey dfwpjc Brees is the same height as Troy and i think he has turned out pretty good dont you (broke record for completions in a season in the history of the league)? Not sayin he will be anything like Brees but give him a chance before you write him off just because of his hieght. His mobility will help his game also with a TE like Heap. Give him a chance Ravens , he could be what you have been lookin for all along - right under your nose....

Oh-oh..... There's something about a Buckeye floating around.

"If you can't make a buckeye pie as good as a pecan pie, then you're not worth the turf you pracice on!"

Not my quote. Just some guy out there.

Few QB's set records in the nfl so don't think you're walking too far out on the limb for this one.How about having a qb that can run your offense efficiently and teammates depend on. Wow, what a unique perspective.

be careful what you wish for

August 10, 2008  05:07 PM ET

This isn't college bucky

Joe Flacco= bust, if he was so good than how come he couldn't beat App St. with a fairly good team?
