Why Weis won't call Irish plays

10:18 AM ET 08.10 | The Notre Dame coach who described play-calling as "my greatest strength" won't call the plays. The architect of the defense that led the nation in sacks last season won't bark out the defensive signals. It seems an odd way to do business. Then again, who could slam the Fighting Irish for being unconventional? The conventional brought only three victories and an immeasurable amount of misery last season. "I've done a lot of due diligence on this," coach Charlie Weis said of his plan. "I don't wing anything." Weis never will be confused with a waif, but he figured he was spread too thin in his first three years on the job. Apparently it only seemed as if his fingerprints were on every aspect of the program. By delegating the play-calling to offensive coordinator Mike Haywood, Weis will be free to help with special teams. And on game days, he will be equipped better to take the pulse of his players. "It will allow me to get fresh bodies on the field and to look in the players' faces," he said. "I'm not going to be standing there studying the call sheet and remembering every formation and trying to decide if it's a left-hash or right-hash play, OK?" OK, I'll buy it. But some high-profile media members are not. Lee Corso of ESPN's "GameDay" crew said in the spring: "Charlie Weis is making a big mistake. He is a born play-caller. He's going to be frustrated like crazy. I'm making a prediction: If they're losing at halftime to San Diego State [in the opener], he'll take over and start calling the plays."

Either Chuckles is setting up his fall guy or playcalling is cutting into his grazing time.

Let's see...maybe it's because the last time he tried calling plays for the Irish, they lost to NAVY... and pretty much everyone else too.

Charlie is good at making excuses. The fact is he sucks at play calling and only excelled at NE because he knew what the other team was going to do due to the fact he knew their signals. If Charlie had never been in the NFL and had those SB rings, he would have never had the opportunity to be a college head coach. And it's only because of the lure of ND and those rings he is able to recruit so well. Though, I do give the egotistic SOB the credit for realizing he is unable to run a college offense and thus give the responsibility to someone that can.

Ouch! Now even the beat (off) writers are making fun.
As a comedian in all seriousness, though: things are NOT looking good in South Bend. It looks like Charlie is still looking for answers, making adjustments, etc., meaning he hasn't found solutions. He's unsure, insecure, tentative. You don't think that the players pick up on that? Time for prayers, Irish fans.

Let me take a guess on why Charlie isn't calling plays for ND. Hmmm. Is it because they were last in total offense last year? Could that be it. Arguably the most storied program in all of college football, with the #1 QB recruit in the nation, finished LAST in total offense.
Charlie Weis is an arrogant excuse-maker. Not so easy when you dont have Tom Brady and Bill Belichick is it Charlie?
Loser.

It's hilarious to read all of these comments. You speak as if you personally know him, yet you've probably never been in the same room as him. Get a grip. Do something with your lives rather than hiding behind your computers and making fun of people. Real mature. Real classy.

The team will be better with a run-oriented system this year. The running backs are better than the receivers. The line is better at run blocking than pass blocking. This team won't struggle offensively.

I give him credit for taking the blame for last season's debacle. Can't be easy to admit that you may be a large part of the problem and give control away to your coaches. Charlie spent part of the summer with Beamer at VA Tech, the programs swapped info and idea's. In order to fix a problem you have to admit there is one in the first place.

He should be fired for losing to TB when he had 75% of the defensive sets. Total fraud.

At some point (and maybe soon) you ND faithful will have to admit that old Charlie ain't the second coming that you thought he was (and are paying for). Indications are that he is a little lost at his situation and doesn't know what to do. He is too arrogant to be humble and has fallen so far so fast he is unsettled. I recall in 2006 when I went to the Fiesta Bowl (ND vs OSU) and spoke with many of the faithful. You guys were so confident (maybe a little cocky) about the future. It was a forgone conclusion that ND: 1) would beat OSU; 2)would win the NC in '07; 3)Brady Quinn would win the Heisman; and that 4) Charlie Weiss was smarter then any other NCAA coach. Now look at your situation.

1. yeah but it wasnt a forgone conclusion nd would beat osu, only among nd fans, and im sure osu fans felt the same way about their team in that fiesta bowl.
2. notre dame was preseason top 3 in almost every media poll
3. brady quinn was a popular preseason favorite to win the heisman by the whole country
4. in 2006 weis deserved that praise for turning a 6-7 insight bowl loser into a bcs bowl participant with one of the top offenses in the country

River - sure any fan can get a bit too confident / cocky. (Lets see what happens with michigan this year.)
But understand this, Charlie helped ND get back what they've been missing; some of the top recruits along with top recruiting classes. He has some great assistant coaches.
Plus he's only in the start of his 4th year. Most of "his "players are now Jr's. He won 9 games in 2005, & 10 in 2006. Both BCS games were lost to teams that have won the NC or played in the title game two years in a row.
To undrestand what happened in 2007 all you have to do is look at the 85 man roster & look at who started the games. (hint most of the skill players were true Fr. & the lines were thin in numbers & size)
When ND wins 8 or more games this year most of you will point at the weak schedule. But ND fan understand it's only one or the other, you either LOVE or HATE the Irish. & just so you know, there's more that love them. ( & when they win there's even more!)
GO IRISH!

NDDL08.
Didn't Charlie go to that BCS Bowl with Tyrone's recruits? I just cant wait for the ND faithful to start admitting Charlie isn't quite the coach you guys thought he was. And, I dont want to hear how great of a recruiter he is. Notre Dame sells itself. No one here is making fun of anyone. Making fun of him would be to tease about his weight, or criticize his haircut. We are simply stating facts. This so called offensive guru led ND to the last ranked offense in the nation last year. Very daunting.
Mich and Mich St combined to outscore ND 69-14. They lost to Navy.
If Charlie doesn't win 8 games this year, with that schedule, and his recruits......he should start feeling the heat.

bkelly, you are missing my point. Sure, all those things were possible and all teams' fans are optomistic.....but the ND fans (and I talked to many of them) were CERTAIN it was going to happen that way. It was like all was now right with the world!
I really don't buy this crap about Willgham's recruits causing the 3-9 season. ND has enough talent each year to do way better then 3-9. Any mediocre coach could deliver a winning season with those players. Quinn, Samardja and co (Wllingham's recuits) carried the team, but Weiss got the credit. The guy is lost...in way over his head. Isn't that obvious?

If you remember that when Charlie was getting ready to come to ND, he was still coaching NE to the Super Bowl. Thus, if I remember correctly never actually had a good recruiting class that year. I think his biggest recruit that blossomed was Kuntz. (And he's awol right now). That's probably their biggest downfall was a whole year of lost recruiting. Which showed. I don't know of how many other top tier teams that start a true freshman quarterback and compete for a NC. So I think you have to give last year a break. You obviously saw what he could do with players who have a little experience and now he has quality recruits coming as well. ND will only get better in time, so watch out!

Didn't Willingham have a better record at ND than Charlie does right now? Yet, Willingham is seen as a failure at ND, and Chucky Weis is seen(only by ND fans) as a great coach.
