Favre runs Jets penalty lap

To his voluminous records, Brett Favre can now add this: He has run the most famous penalty lap in N.F.L. history. Any idea that Favre might be getting the royal treatment since joining the Jets went out the window Sunday, after he and center Nick Mangold botched a snap midway through the morning practice. The ball hit the ground, and Mangold and Favre -- adhering to Coach Eric Mangini's old-school methods -- hit the road, to cheering from the crowd. During the run, Mangold asked Favre if the fumble was his fault, and Favre said no, although Mangold said he did not believe him.

Is wanting to play so badly worth what you are doing to your legacy?
This embarrassment will continue all season long and will be painful to watch.
Narcissism is truly one of man's worst traits

Wow, he ran a lap. Great story..

August 11, 2008  06:56 AM ET

Non-newsworthy. Everyone in every camp runs a lap from time-to-time.

I hear he jumped into the little JET airplane, they have at the games, and flew around the track. jerry

wow!!! And what color is his jock strap?

August 11, 2008  07:58 AM ET

Wait a minute. Favre and Mangold, quarterback and center, botched a snap and had to do a lap. Mangold, the center, asks Favre, the quarterback, if the fumble was his (Favre's) fault. Favre says no but Mangold doesn't believe him. I don't know which one deserves my sympathy, Favre or Mangold. Looks like the Jets will be flying 'high' this year. Oy!

Did the old man use a walker or an elcertic wheel chair? next truth and rumor will be Favre drinks ensure before practices to help keep his energy up.

I hope Favrfe doesn't pass gas at practice cause we will have to read about that!!!

August 11, 2008  08:09 AM ET

If its such a non-story and not news worthy, why read it and why comment on it?

August 11, 2008  08:17 AM ET

Come on, Nick Mangold asked if it was not Brett's fault but his own.

Real Sports: Weak Sauce | 08/11/08, 08:02 AM

So Brett was taking the responsibility for the fumble but Mangold thought the fault was his and not Brett's. Okay, that's different then. Thanks. =-]

And this coming out of a Jr. fan.

if he had to run a lap for each turnover during his career, he'd own the penalty lap record too..

Do you get the feeling that Mangini and Favre had a talk before practice....

"Listen Brett... I think I know how we can really make the team view you as a teammate and not a media distraction. Get this: You know how I'm 'old school' with the lap-running, right?...."

August 11, 2008  09:21 AM ET

Oh wow, what a great way to start off...

Or maybe those are his rules and no one is immune to them. There isn't a conspiracy in everything that is done.

You give him special treatment and everyone's critical. You treat him like another member of the squad and everyone's critical. Sheesh.
