Rangers to open vault for pitching

We hear Rangers president Nolan Ryan will open up Tom Hicks's pocketbook this offseason and make a big attempt to land major pitching help. CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets are likely targets (and Toronto's A.J. Burnett could be had in a trade). Texas entered last night's action with a league-worst 5.27 ERA, yet still had a 60-57 record and was in the wild-card hunt. It's a shame the Rangers have given away Justin Duchscherer, Chris Young, Armando Galarraga, and John Danks in various trades or they'd have a pretty good staff.

Plus, the Rangers gave up Edinson Volquez in the Hamilton deal. That would be a pretty good starting 5, huh? Sheets may be the guy.

Volquez never did well as a Ranger. The problem is the league and the Rangers' pitching coaches. They suck. Plain and simple. They cannot develop a good young arm to save their lives.

Rangers with Sabathia, Sheets, Burnett and their offense in that park = real threat.

Remember what happened last time Hicks opened his checkbook...Arod anyone. They were mired in last place for years.

August 11, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Yes, but spending tons on quality pitching will get you more in the end. And, I'm sure, Nolan wouldn't screw the team over that way.

August 11, 2008  09:34 AM ET

If they land all three pitchers then look for this team to win 95+ games next year.

August 11, 2008  09:44 AM ET

I'm sure they won't land all three of them, but any of them would be better than signing another Padilla to big dollars.....

August 11, 2008  09:51 AM ET

Carlos Silva and Gil Meche are probably kicking themselves for not waiting to cash in on their mediocre talent. Rangers plus desperate plus fat check book equals lots of soon-to-be crappy pitchers with 6.00 ERA's will have tens of millions of dollars in the bank.

Finally...Everytime I heard the 2008 Ranger marketing line "You could use some baseball" all I was thinking in response was "You could use some decent pitching"!

Gotta love those Rangers, they will open the vault to win. I mean, look at the decade of dominance they have enjoyed since signing Arod in 2001!!!!!

August 11, 2008  10:40 AM ET

they are going to have a lot of competition for those guys...I expect the yanks to go after at least 2 of the 3 if not all 3...sabathia, sheets, joba, mussina, and someone else for the '09 rotation.

August 11, 2008  10:43 AM ET

tell it like it is

even though they gave up volquez they got back probably the MVP of the AL. that guy is destroying the ball and he also plays great centerfield which they have been looking for someone to play.
fist full of dollars | 08/11/08, 09:54 AM

yes, but they have been looking for a volquez type pitcher for the last 15 years...good hitting OF's are much easier to come by than CY young candidates...they would be in better shape if they had kept volquez and signed say a torii hunter or similar....this is taking nothing away from hamilton...who is an absolute beast.

August 11, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Sabathia, Milwood, Sheets, Burnett, and some other guy. Good starting 4 for the Rangers, I'd say.

August 11, 2008  10:46 AM ET

I don't really think C.C. is a viable AL pitcher. He's doing well w/ the Brew Crew because hitters in the NL haven't gotten used to his tendencies....but they will and then he'll have less success. I'll call it now, he won't be worth what you offer, Mr. Ryan.

August 11, 2008  10:52 AM ET

Now that Nolan is making the calls around there, I think the Rangers may try to land one of those guys. Although I doubt the New York teams, the Angels, or the Red Sox will be more likely to land them.

Take Millwood out of that rotation and then you will have a good starting 4.

i guess you missed his first 4-5 year stint in the AL with CLE...I believe he won a cy young there as well...yes, he would probably be better off in the NL (as any pitcher would) but he is certainly viable in the AL.
