The Wild's first step toward signing Marian Gaborik to a contract extension may come this week when general manager Doug Risebrough meets with the star winger in Trencin, Slovakia. No meeting is set, but Risebrough is flying to Gaborik's homeland today to scout an under-18 tournament in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Gaborik, 26, is entering the final year of a three-year extension that will pay him $7.5 million. Risebrough hopes to visit Gaborik in Trencin to discuss the future of the team's leading scorer and last remaining original franchise member.

I may be going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing Risbrough can at least handle a Holiday Inn.

There have been rumors that the Hurricanes want Gaborik. The trade would be something along the lines of Justin Williams, Frank Kaberle and one our of Prospects. I don't know if the Wild would go for this, but it would be interesting to have Gaborik with Staal, that'd be a pretty lethal combination. Only problem is that the 'Canes next year would have to resign both Gaborik and Staal, which would get into the situation a lot of teams are getting into and committing 40% of the Salary Cap to 2 players.

This is very true. However, the 'Canes have a self-imposed salary cap of around 45 million by Peter Karmanos. If he spent the money on Staal's extension and got Gaborik for that price, we'd still be under the cap by about 4-5 million. So it'll be interesting. I don't know if I'd trade Williams though, I'd much rather prefer Whitney than Williams as he's still getting better.

Of course this is all speculation at this point though. So who knows. I think it'd be pretty cool to have Gaborik in Raleigh though. If the 'Canes score more and get back to the playoffs by not being injured, they'd be a successful franchise again. They've been posting profits, but not huge ones, once the playoffs are made again, they'll be profiting again, and Gaborik is the type of player that can do that. He plays fast, and that is Carolina's style. Gosh I'd love to have him on our team, he's been wasting away in Lemaire's system.

Excellent piece of reporting this is. (Apologies to Yoda). When they meet in Slovakia, they can talk about an extension. Of course, they don't have a meeting set up in Slovakia. What a dumb article.

In order for them to resign him...They need show him a plan that Jaques will be OUT. he is not a player that fits into the horse crap of a system that the wild play....If they get rid of Jaques this year, they may have a chance at signing him..If not...Bye Bye Gaborik!
