Rays may lose Crawford for season

The Rays should know more today about the right hand injury that will sideline star leftfielder Carl Crawford for at least two weeks and possibly require season-ending surgery, and that could say a lot about their chances to continue winning and reach the playoffs. Crawford felt a "pop" in his right hand during his final at-bat on Saturday, and his middle finger began to lock up due to what the Rays say is "tendon subluxation," a problem with the tendon being out of its normal groove. After being examined by Mariners medical director Dr. Edward Khalfayn, Crawford said Sunday morning he could be out six to eight weeks and might need surgery that could prevent him from returning this season.

This is what separates contenders from pretenders. Are you deep enough to compete after losing key players to injuries? I think the Rays are deep enough. We'll see.

I hope he isn't out for an extended period.....this would really hurt their chances. You're right, though, CF2, dealing with injuries and overcoming them is typically what separates the playoff teams from the non-playoff teams

first the Res Sox lose a pitcher, and now this... keeps getting better and better

Tough luck for Crawford and the Rays but glad to see Rocco Baldelli back in the majors !!! He's a great kid with a lot of heart !!!

ok now i have a question for all the people out there
how are the Rays sooo **** good
they are lead the AL east with a group of players who could still be in the minors at best and have been in the cellar the past couple of years i mean EVERY YEAR!! is it cuz they changed there name jersey wat???

August 11, 2008  02:33 PM ET

They've got a lot of good young talent there, sports4life. The names are not as recognizable as the Yanks or Red Sox, but there is very good young talent in Tampa, especially in the rotation.

as a yankee fan I would hate to see them win the division and then have to go into the playoffs without crawford...If they must win the division, I hope they do so intact. crawford would be a big loss.

on the bright side, it was the mariners Dr. that told them 6-8 weeks, if he is as incompetent as the rest of the mariners then crawford will be back in 6-8 minutes.

whatchu talkin' about willis? I read this 8 times and am still not sure what it says. The rays success has nothing to do with the jersey...they have talent.

I hope the Rays make the playoffs. I hope Crawford can get back in a couple of weeks. I hope the Yankees gag like a fat kid that swallowed a grubworm.

It's about time these guys had some injuries, I hear Eva Longoria's out too. Wisteria Lane won't be the same.

August 11, 2008  08:43 PM ET

Longoria too? I'm not sure they are that deep. I'm not sure any team is deep enough to lose both their top hitters and not lose ground in the standings.

Never, my friend. Never. I have to smell good.

August 11, 2008  11:37 PM ET

Yeah, they just DL'd Longoria. Such a shame for the Rays

Anybody want to guess the date that TB relinquishes the AL east lead to Boston? They gave up 5 games liketty split before the All Star break. They are up 4 games right now.

I say Wednesday the 20th. Red Sox will be in Baltimore finishing a series. Tampa will be finishing a series with the Angels.

Tampa Bay emergence has been one of the great stories of 08' MLB season but it is hard to see how they survive the Crawford/Longoria injuries.
