Lidge links injury to All-Star manager

"I'm going to be ready to throw," Phillies closer Brad Lidge said before last night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. "It's up to them right now. If they don't call down [to the bullpen], they don't call down, but I'm ready." That's a relief for the Phillies, if Lidge's assessment is accurate. He had been unable to pitch since Friday because of stiffness, soreness and inflammation in his right shoulder. Lidge said his shoulder had not felt 100 percent since before the All-Star Game last month at Yankee Stadium. But he also acknowledged that the way he was used at the All-Star Game did not help matters. Colorado Rockies manager Clint Hurdle had Lidge warm up six times before he pitched in the 15th inning. Lidge had not warmed up more than once in a game before that. "He's just now getting back to where he should be, really," said manager Charlie Manuel, who was not happy that Hurdle used his closer like that in an exhibition game. "That he's sore every now and then goes back to the fact that he threw 120 pitches and he's only used to throwing around 30."

Problem is, as much as we like to call it that, its not an exhibition game anymore. It means too much. And Lidge is a baby. I don't hear these excuses coming out of anywhere else.

NO ONE else threw over 100 pitches genius...that's why you don't hear it. I'm 100000000% positive if any yankee, red sox, cubs, mets,etc... player was used that much, they would be complaining as well. That is not healthy for a reliever.

Clint Hurdle is a complete moron and should die.

If that was Mariano, who has been more durable then Lidge, I would have been really angry.
They need to add pitchers. If they don't want to add more all stars they can have some of the kids who were selected but did not play in the futures game available once the rest of the pitchers are done.

Exactly, every other player who threw that many pitches would be just as angry.

F Hurdle

What non-idiot major league pitcher throws that much to warm up anyway? After the third time he got up, he should have been warm. Anything after that, he should have told Hurdle where to go.

Excuses and finger pointing from a Phillie..... big shock..... man up Lidge!

Or, better yet, maybe managers should let pitchers be in the game for more than one inning. Three pitchers at three innings each = nine innings. Shocking.

Dumbest comment I ever heard. If it was your team, you would be just as mad.

August 12, 2008  09:29 AM ET

maybe Lidge should shut his mouth and get over himself. NO ONE made him throw that many pitches he could have thrown the first time, and then just stayed warmed up. maybe done a few throws once on the mound.

August 12, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Is Lidge the first ever pitcher to warm up with that amount of pitches? The All-Star Game is an exhibition, but it still is baseball, right? Blaming Hurdle for this doesn't sound too wise...

its time to drop the meaning from the game and just let the guys play. if they win or lose, who really cares. the managers are handcuffed in managing these pitchers b/c a 1/3 aren't supposed to pitch, 1/3 are starters that will only go 2 innings max and the other 1/3 are relievers that aren't used to pitching more than one inning. either add more pitchers or put in a pitching machine (add one more fielder) and lets watch the hitters hit. this game means absolutly nothing and the injury risk to these overly coddled pitchers is way too high.

August 12, 2008  09:51 AM ET

I agree with Cheesy......Hurdle shouldn't have had him warm up six times....but why didn't Lidge just stop throwing? Or at least not throw that many pitches.

This will lead to another round of debate about the AS game and how players should be used. They should take the home field advantage thing out of play, bring about 20 pitchers for each side and make a rule that no one pitches more than 1 inning. And nobody warms up 6 times.

August 12, 2008  10:04 AM ET

how many pithces did that old dued throw to hamilton in the HR derby? you don't see him complaining here and he's 87 years old.

honestly, hurdle is a **** for letting lidge throw that many pitches.

August 12, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Why not adopt the NFL priciple and have the All Start game AFTER the World Series. For one thing, you would definitely get the guy who DESERVES to be there since everyone will see a complete season's worth of stats on a guy before voting for him. And you can even hold the game in Hawaii or some South American country for good weather.

August 12, 2008  10:30 AM ET

Selig made sure it was no longer and exhibition game when he gave the winner home field advantage in the world series. If managers do not want their players to go then they should do something about it. As for Lidge he still has not gotten over Pujols moon shot home run a few years ago. He has not been the same since then.

August 12, 2008  10:48 AM ET

Another primadonna athlete who needs to blame everyone else for his problems.... If you are a major league pitcher I think you should know how to warm up properly and if you don't...give someone else with a brain a chance in the majors...

Okay, so the manager told him to get up six times. Ultimately, it's the pitcher that lets the bullpen coach know when he's ready. Lidge has been a reliever long enough to know just because he's told to warm up doesn't mean he's going into the game; at least right away. Situations change from batter to batter. Lidge is just pi**ed off because he took the loss. To those of you who think they should take the WS home field advantage out of the AS game; I agree 100%. The AS game is for the enjoyment of the fans since they select the starting position players. Now, do the best players at their position always get voted in? Absolutely NOT!! Is this fair? ABSOLUTELY!! WHY? Because these are the players the fans want to see and it's "THEIR GAME." However, the AS game should NOT be connected to the WS!! Just my opinion.
