Daugherty to boost diversity

Brad Daugherty, already the most visible black man in NASCAR, is becoming a fulltime Sprint Cup team owner. Daugherty has been an on-and-off team owner for the past 20 years at the sport's Class AAA level, and is a TV analyst for ESPN's Sprint Cup coverage. His move should be a big step forward for NASCAR's diversity program. Striking while the iron is hot, Daugherty, a Black Mountain native and formerNorth Carolina basketball star, has bought into partnership with Tad Geschickter, a former advertising exec who has been running a Nationwide team the past few years. The two will be campaigning Marcos Ambrose on the Sprint Cup tour next season full-time, Daugherty said. Daugherty says he also plans to run two NASCAR Late Model teams "with drivers of color."

A feel good story. Ambroise has a ride next year. Perhaps he will even qualify occassionally - right Mike-y?

Jackman, you are looking Perky this morning!

Hello gents.
I like Daugherty. I think he really loves the sport. It'll be great if he can make money instead of lose it. NASCAR is a hard business.

Store bought floatman....hell, might be an improvement for you to consider.

August 12, 2008  08:34 AM ET

Why does the color of his skin have anything to do with being in NASCAR. The last time I checked the average fan doesnt care about race. The ones most vocal about it are the ones who dont watch it and think of it as a white redneck only sport.

August 12, 2008  08:52 AM ET

Good perspective buckguy. Its sort of like NBA basketball in reverse with lumping a bunch as hoods. I like the NBA too.

August 12, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Will he be a good owner and leave the booth to focus on his team? :cough: rusty :cough:

Here is the DEAL!!! Not a racist person, not even close, but why is it we always have to get more blacks or whatever in sports where there is not (too)many. If its oppurtunities? Ok I see that. But let the best drivers drive whatever color, there shouldnt be a black driver just to have one, if he or she isnt good enough. Same in baseball, they always say we have a (crisis) in baseball not enough blacks, WHATEVER!!! A crisis is a storm destroying a town, or a lost loved one, not these issues, then I guess we have a crisis in the NBA we need more whites there, we should start a diversity program for the nba too. I think the road goes both ways, and its not been.

August 12, 2008  09:53 AM ET

I am waiting on the NHL to jump on the diversity bandwagon and go after black players too. Maybe the NBA can join in and go after non-European white guys?

Thought America was supposed to be the great melting pot where you could get ahead based on your accomplishments and not the color of your skin... Didn;t some guy named Martin Luther Jr. talk about that. You think he would have wanted Black people getting ahead just because of the color of their skin? I doubt it. What some call diversity programs and affirmative action, others call reverse discrimination.

August 12, 2008  10:03 AM ET

I'm just waiting for the NASCAR PR machine to throw this up when the lawsuit gets heated up again (You know the one I'm talking about). They'll say "Look, we aren't prejudice or treat black Americans any different. We have a black announcer, team owner...how could we be prejudice?" Anyone want to take bets on how long it will take for NASCAR to twist it that way?

August 12, 2008  10:15 AM ET

uh oh, it's starting to get tense in here.

Startin to get all racial up in this piece!!! Sorry folks, but the stereotype IS that NASCAR is ful of rednecks and ****. You can say it isn't till the crackheads come home but the rest of the nation will disagree. To those that don't live here, South = Rednecks and ****...sad but true. Ask Willie T. Ribbs about the dark side of NASCAR.

August 12, 2008  11:03 AM ET

You mean this Willy T Ribbs?

Lowe's Motor Speedway president Humpy Wheeler entered Ribbs to drive a Winston Cup car owned by Will Cronkite in the 1978 World 600 at the Charlotte track. After Ribbs skipped two practice sessions and was arrested for evading police when he drove the wrong way down a one way street, Cronkite replaced him.

I'm not racist at all, but why is it blacks have be in every sport, they have taken ove basketball, football etc. If we had white exbowl it would be race, race. This our redneck sport.
