Cowboys not looking for backup QB

Jerry Jones downplayed the possibility of the Cowboys finding a QB to bump Brad Johnson down the depth chart. "We really are moving along here real good," Jerry said when asked about acquiring a QB via trade or the waiver wire. "I can't give that a high likelihood." Jerry added that the Cowboys' priority regarding the backup QB was giving Brad Johnson more time with the starters. If Johnson plays during the regular season, it'll be behind an offensive line featuring three Pro Bowlers, so the plan is to get him more reps with that group protecting him. Wade Phillips mentioned the same thing during his press conference.

The offensive line had nothing to do with the interception Johnson threw to a wide open DB with not a Cowboy receiver even even in the picture frame! I had flashbacks and had to do a double take to make sure that wasn't Drew Bledsoe back there! We need a backup QB JJ, don't screw this up!

I'm sure jerry will eventually get someone half-decent to hold the clip board.

Romo's free-lancing nature in roaming outside the pocket makes backup QB a little more significant than simply holding a clip board!

Jerry Jones will sign someone. The Bucs have like 4 or 5 QBs, they gotta cut someone.

August 12, 2008  07:47 AM ET

Scrap Grampa Johnson and get some fresh legs.......

August 12, 2008  08:10 AM ET

Jerry usually does the opposite of what he says....... you would think the media would catch on by now !!!!!!!!!!!! 2 to 3 weeks and there will be a new backup qb learning the system

August 12, 2008  08:22 AM ET

for some reason ... I just don't believe this story ...

August 12, 2008  08:30 AM ET

Yes they are......

more reps don't help old age.

What's he going to say? Of course they're looking for a different back-up. Jerry's always looking for ways to improve his team. But, he isn't going to say anything unless he is about to sign that person.

August 12, 2008  11:05 AM ET

They should be looking for a starter.........Tony Romo?....What has he proved? He certainly proved he can lose big games, highly overrated, just like his girlfriend.

August 12, 2008  11:05 AM ET

Jerry, please dood, get a backup. Simms wants to come home, give him a call. It doesn't matter how much talent you put on this team, if Romo goes down, it's all over. Sorry Brad, you're just really old.

August 12, 2008  11:16 AM ET

Exactly, what is he going to say? It's like working for a company and they know they are going to layoff 1/3 of the workers. When asked about it they say, "We don't have any immediate plans to cut anyone." In their minds they are telling the truth because the cut isn't coming today but 3 days from now. Until you are cut you don't get the word unless in a case such as sports you hear about trade rumors.

August 12, 2008  11:58 AM ET

Jerry, were you watch the same game as I was last Saturday evening???? If Romo goes down, we are pretty screwed.

The real question here is , can anyone name what other team in the NFL Johnson would be a backup on when he is cut?

August 12, 2008  12:34 PM ET

I believe Johnson will do fine, I also think Simms would be a good fit....

The Raiders will usually sign just about anyone.
