Why Sakic will put off retirement

I would bet that Joe Sakic will be back with the Avalanche. Monday, The Captain spoke to KKFN-104.3 FM, about his upcoming annual golf tournament to benefit Food Bank of the Rockies. Sakic, keeping his "Quoteless Joe" nickname firmly entrenched, gave The Fan hosts nothing. He's still deciding, he said, and probably won't announce a final decision for a couple more weeks. But I'll go on record right now and say his decision will be to come back. There are too many clues to say otherwise. Among them: Sakic is still working out hard. If you were about to retire after two decades in the NHL, would you still want to hit the gym every morning, or might you want to tip back a few every afternoon on the 19th hole? When he talks to teammates, he's still using the word "we," not "them." True, Gordie Howe still refers to the Red Wings as "we" when he talks about them, but that didn't happen for at least a decade after he left Detroit and played in Houston and Hartford. But here's why I think the Avalanche icon will soon announce he's coming back: He has heard from too many others who have had their feet in his skates, guys like Steve Yzerman and Claude Lemieux, guys who agonized about the right time to retire. The consensus from those former greats is: Play as long as you can. If you're not hurt and think you still can play, do it.

You are a legend.

Stick around another couple of years Joe. You still got it in ya. A true class act for a pro athlete.

Smarmy

When it's a guy with the ability and I daresay class of a Joe Skic? We don't need a soap opera, but updates are okay. Thi ISN'T Mats we're talking about.
By the way..Smarmy...have a coffee or something, way to early to be that snippy...

Sakic can still play at a high level so why not return if he wants to play. Skating is the hard part of the game and he is still one of the best.

But if he wants another cup he isn't going to get it playing in Colorado. Those days are long gone.

he wont retire untill after the 2010 olympics because they are in his backyard

August 12, 2008  10:55 AM ET

i hope he dosent anyway he still has it and would be great for canada to have in 2010

Though it pains me as a Wings and a Stevie Y fan, I would have to say that Joe is one of the great leaders of hockey. Joe, Stevie and Messier all seem to have the similar kind of aura to lead a hockey team. Despite all the blood and hurt feelings in the 90's between those two teams, I still had to respect them just for Joe alone (because it certainly wouldn't be because of Roy or Claude).

Santapig

I am also a big Stevie Y fan (try that in NYC sometime, where the think Messier is just a typo)
and Joe does fit the mold of the other two

Don't remind me. I'm already pee-ed off about it and they are still only preparing for it.

Limpics are like a prison awaiting construction or a proposed landfill. Not in my back yard...

Just one more thing for me to ignore.

Still bent out of shape over Draper's bad bounce?

August 12, 2008  12:42 PM ET

Yeah Hank, a little. I'm sure other items in his years have done it as well (such as last game against Dallas), but in watching the DVD I got of this season you get some close-ups of Kris, and his face is not pretty. That man truly has given up is body for the sport. Anyway, it's a little about that, but more of the cowardly thing. You know, it's one thing if he's mean spirited out there and you can call him a thug or a villain, but he turtled up like he couldn't own up to what he did.

And no offense to our French Canadian friends, but French Canadians kind of annoy me. Oh, so I guess I did mean to offend...sorry. Anyway, the accent bugs me, and then you've got Roy talking about not being able to hear Roenick because he's got his rings in his ears (where'd you put the other rings Patrick!?)...it didn't seem like bravado boasting, but more...I don't know...more like the Frenchman on Cheers. "Voodie, I'm going to steal your giirrrlfriend."

Could you please fill this Rookie in on these bits of hockey history?
Thanks.

p.s. Hank, Those comments about Gretzky on that 20th Anniversary thread were a little Grinchley, eh?? ( chuckle )

BTW, that comment of "rough edges" relates to why, several moons ago, I put out that question of who you guys consider to be the most COMPLETE player ever.

Not counting guys I didn't see, but before he started getting hurt piece by piece, Forsberg was a pretty good all around player
