Girardi overrules Joba's rehab

Joba Chamberlain was overruled. Chamberlain told an Associated Press reporter Monday he would resume playing catch Wednesday. But after Yankees manager Joe Girardi heard that, the plan was changed. "I made the suggestion that he just waits till Friday till we get home," Girardi said last night, "so that he's in front of us (and) we have a chance to look at him." Chamberlain, who is on the disabled list, came out of the Aug. 4 game at Texas with what was then termed shoulder stiffness. After an MRI and examinations by Yankees doctors and noted orthopedist James Andrews, Chamberlain's injury was termed "rotator-cuff tendinitis," and the Yankees have not been more specific. Since the diagnosis, Chamberlain has been at the Yankees facility in Tampa, Fla. And while he has declared he will be back in the majors before the end of August, the more reasonable assumption is sometime in September. Girardi said say he is "not necessarily so sure" Chamberlain will need a minor-league rehabilitation assignment.

Yanks are done for this season, so just save the kids arm, bring up some AAA guys, and get ready for next season.

If rehab decisions are being made between the Manager and a 23 year old pitcher rather then the midical staff it might explain the rash of injuries. Dr. Andrews is one of the worlds top authorities, what did he say?

Joba has been on a light tossing program the whole time......Tossing twinkies & ho ho's down his gullet.

As a Yankee fan I HATE to admit it......
but you may be right.
- at best- I'd send him back to the pen to allow his arm to recoup.

I'd have to agree too.Bring up some guys from AAA and let Joba the Hut heal properly so he doesnt have anything long-term happen.Only reson this is a story is because Joe's trying to get them in the playoffs and we all know how those Steinbrenners are.

NO ONE in AAA to bring back up, we brought up Ian Kennedy... WHAT A MISTAKE that was. Hughes pitched last night hopefully did good, and should be ready to come of the DL. and who knows what Pavano will do??? we need Joba back, we are still in the Wild card race, but still need good pitching and the bats to wake the hell up and get going..

Take your time and heal properly Joba.

the recent play indicates the yanks aren't going to make it. however, not all is lost - barring further injuries to the staff (how many more can they have) they could enter next year with an upcoming ace, Joba, Wang (could be a dominant #2 or #3) and Mussina (who looks like he has learned how to pitch again.) Hughes has potential and would be able to develop in the 4th or 5th spot (instead of the #1 or #2 as he was slated to do this year.) Add on FA pitcher like sabathia and the staff looks good for once. This completely ignores Pettitie, Ponson and Rasner (who are all servicable 4th or 5th starters. You can never have enough pitching.

the bigger question I have for Girardi is why Damon is sitting on the bench. The top hitter in the league and the Yanks only real table setter is sitting way too often.

August 12, 2008  10:01 AM ET

Shut it down joba. No need to risk further injury...I'm a Yanks fan, but can see the ship sinking already after that horrible series with the Angels.

August 12, 2008  10:04 AM ET

that ship started to sink during that series with the O's. the pitching was terrible.

August 12, 2008  10:12 AM ET

The Yanks don't want to shut him down and send him home this early. They're afraid he'll show up next year trimming out at about 325lbs.

August 12, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Then they will have to list his weight as 250lbs, Dressed!

Dum Dum,
Girardi likes to get everyone involved, he will play bench guys or platoon guys just to keep guys fresh and in the game. I am not sure if I am in agreement with the regularity with which he does this, but it has worked for the bullpen.
