Why Red Sox traded for Byrd

While the Red Sox' acquisition of pitcher Paul Byrd from Cleveland yesterday was not exactly a dismissal of struggling starter Clay Buchholz, it would seem they have determined that they cannot continue to chase a postseason berth with a member of the rotation in as dire straits as the rookie has been. Though nothing was announced regarding Buchholz, Byrd will pitch in his spot in the rotation Friday against Toronto at Fenway Park. "By no means are we giving up on Clay Buchholz," said general manager Theo Epstein. "Far from it. We still think he's going to be a huge part of our future and may well prove to be an important part of our present.

Well, they are going to need more than Buchholz to make the playoffs! They seem to be lacking consistent bullpen depth and starting pitching at the 3-5 spots. We need all the help possible if we want to make another run this year.

Maybe they should do a reverse Joba and put Clay in the pen for the rest of the year?

All I know it was one hell of a game last night & Zink showed promise. 19-17??? WOW!

August 13, 2008  05:59 AM ET

Zink was zunk! Hopefully the Byrd will fly higher than the bombs from last nights game.

I said he showed promise ... he definitely needs to work on some stuff. I too hope Byrd will fill the bullpen void ... and I hope Wake comes back soon.

Buchholz seems (this season) to be good for 2-3 innings then fall apart. So I think a try at some bullpen work might be good for him. Right now, It probably wont be any worse.

Imagine this team if they could have pulled the strings to get CC. Then again, you could have said this about a few other teams too.

August 13, 2008  08:08 AM ET

Actually, Buchholz has been terrible right out of the gate this year. He is usually good for 2 walks and at least 2 runs every first inning. Not sure what his problem is, but he's been a real disappointment.

Considering 2 of Pettite's last 3 starts he might be penciled in as the #2 starter at the moment.

I think they want masterson for the Joba role this season. I think buck needs some more time in aaa ball. The no hitter was probably the worst thing to happen to him as they have tried to rush him since. he will be good done the road (same as the yankees young pitchers)

August 13, 2008  08:55 AM ET

If he can healthy... I still remember his lack of health and money that was spent on him in Atlanta.. hopefully he will be a help... unlikely.

August 13, 2008  08:55 AM ET

Zink does not equal Wakfield yet thats for sure

August 13, 2008  08:56 AM ET

I guess for a fifth starter Byrd is OK.... but is this really the move that gets you into the playoffs? Byrd's best days were 5-6 years ago...... I'm not sure this is a big improvement unless the belief is that anything would be better than what they've got now.....

Without injuries the Yankees have an excellent starting 5. Joba Wang Moose Pettitte and Ponson all have era's below 4 or near 4 which having to pitch in the AL East is excellent. Boston as well has an excellent starting 5 in Dice K Beckett Lester Wake and now Byrd. If either of those staffs pitched in the NL they would easily be the best starting 5 in baseball especially if they were in the woeful NL West. It amzez me how these posts ignore the difference in the leagues.
