USC offense struggles in practice

The timeline for USC quarterback Mark Sanchez's return from a knee injury took on an added sense of urgency Tuesday after an unimpressive performance by the Trojans' offense during a scrimmage at the Coliseum. Granted, it was the first time that Aaron Corp and Mitch Mustain were at the controls with a chance to possibly start the Aug. 30 opener. But the offense scored only once in 11 series -- and those points came on a touchdown pass from emergency back-up Garrett Green to receiver Brandon Carswell. Carroll maintained he was not worried about the offense -- "It's too early to be concerned about anything right now," he said -- and described the scrimmage as "a really good first outing for us." Meanwhile, Sanchez was encouraged after team physician James Tibone examined his left kneecap. Sanchez said his rehabilitation would become slightly more aggressive and that he still hoped to return for the opener.

OH, how the mighty have fallen. One out of eleven? WOW, but you just knew the ride wouldn't last forever, as other teams and conferences make adjustments.

Couldn't this all be angled instead as a great day for a great defensive unit? As a USC fan, at the moment, that's the way I'm taking it... Please Sanchez, please be ready for Aug. 30!

Personally, I hope USC goes 0-12, and Pete Carroll heads for the NFL.

August 13, 2008  08:09 AM ET

Boy, I wish Michigan had this problem at the Qb position. USC is in extreme dire straits!

August 13, 2008  08:10 AM ET

DO_

Carroll will not head to the NFL. Life is too good for him at SC. SC will do fine. But if they do lose a lot this year, the one win I hope they do get is against OSU.

Big deal it was 1 practice. Good point Eastcoast they always say the offense had a bad day but forget to say what a great day the defense had.

August 13, 2008  09:00 AM ET

1 practice is not a big deal. Plus even if Sanchez cant start game one, Mustain is good enough to lead that team over Virginia.

August 13, 2008  09:14 AM ET

Look.... I'm a huge Trojan fan, but they just lost half their lineup, including the QB to the NFL..... 7 picks in the first two rounds..... I'm not sure this is going to be their year..... they'll be good, but not great..... look out next year, though....

August 13, 2008  09:37 AM ET

You better hope Dirty Sanchez gets better fast. There's a reason Mitch Mustain wasn't a starter

August 13, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Of course they are struggling now. It is the middle of the month. The Boosters pay out on the first of every month....

August 13, 2008  09:51 AM ET

only if usc still had reggie bush, then they could cheat their way to another championship... the bling would be flying!!!!!

August 13, 2008  09:56 AM ET

of course he is still innocent until proven innocent by the ncaa ..since pete carroll doesnt do anything wrong!!ha ha

August 13, 2008  10:03 AM ET

usc is going to struggle all year... all you usc fans are going to get your feelings hurt on sept 13th

August 13, 2008  10:24 AM ET

Too soon for panic, Trojan fans. These guys will click with the offense. Besides, Pete has to get both ready to step in even if Sanchez returns. His injury could flare up again or he could get hurt in another way. (Remember what happened last year with Boot-tay.) This was the first time apparently against the first team defense. Besides, the Trojans have excellent assistant coaches and all should be well in the Southland this fall.

August 13, 2008  10:25 AM ET

PS Troy will not go undefeated this year.

August 13, 2008  10:26 AM ET

I'm quite certain that Rey Maualuga's feelings are going to get hurt as he is pummeling Boeckman into the ground. As for struggling, yeah our offense has to reload...but it didn't it have to reload when Leinart became the starter?

Some major upsets have happened at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville! USC better not take the Hoos lightly looking ahead to Ohio St.

August 13, 2008  11:29 AM ET

Think about how bad this offense will be if Stefon Johnson and Joe Mcknight can't step up.
Think about it, they have a new O-line with only 1 returning starter, and 3 sophmores being forced to start. A Newly shaky QB sutiation, two sub-par WR, and an excelent defense, this USC team seems like the college version of the Bears

It's practice.

This is USC. Until something drastic happens, I'm not ready to pick anyone to take over the throne as top NCAA team.
