Why Islanders hired Gordon

After parting ways with Ted Nolan on July 14, Islanders GM Garth Snow hired former Providence Bruins head coach Scott Gordon, who won AHL Coach of the Year honors last season. Snow said during a conference call last night that he was unconcerned with Gordon's lack of experience. "He's the right coach for this team," said Snow, who first met Gordon over two decades ago, when both were in training camp with the Quebec Nordiques. "He's got tremendous credentials from the AHL and the [ECHL]. He fits our plan of developing young players." That's something that Snow and Nolan clashed over, as the GM wants to build through youth, despite the presence of older players such as Mike Sillinger, Bill Guerin and the recently signed Doug Weight. But it's Gordon's success with Providence that likely got him the job, as Snow wants to see players like Kyle Okposo and Blake Comeau develop.

Come on Sens Fan. Let's see an avatar to go with that comment. The generic FanNation flag logo avatar isn't doing it for ya.

"Why Islanders hired Gordon": because no one else wanted the job perhaps?

I'm with sensfan: "it's still the wrong gm".

August 13, 2008  07:06 AM ET

Gordon seems to me like he'll just be a patsy/whipping boy/fallguy type...so that when Snow inevitably shanks things up again for the team, he can attempt to blindside the local media and fans by blaming the coach.

It's just not the same when YODA speaks in complete sentences.......

August 13, 2008  07:15 AM ET

When they fix this strange system error with my avatar, I'm sure my vocal patterns will also return to normal as well. Hopefully they sort it out by the time the Olympics are over.

August 13, 2008  07:18 AM ET

I hope so!!!!!!

Yoda, you will be in trouble if Baun-ded catches you policing the avatars in this manner .... he considers that HIS job

August 13, 2008  07:31 AM ET

I wish the guy all the luck in the world and he's gonna need it. Snowjob and Wang Chung got there yes man. He'll be gone in two years. Everybody have fun tonight, everybody wang chung tonight.

Oilers - NHI,
Baunded should be thanking me. I was actually just happy to see another Sens Fan on the site. But since my avatar-age is already in Olympics limbo, I was hoping this guy could get that Ottawa Senators Trojan Condom avatar up there and represent for fat-cat city.

August 13, 2008  07:51 AM ET

^^
Yoda, I hear you. But Baun-ded has previous form when it comes to this - ask Therrien Rocks about it. It involves a mallet and harsh words. Although, of course, that would be no match for your lightsabre .... I take it all back :)

Gordon is a coach that Snow can Control. The Islanders organization is a joke. They can draft the next greatest things and they will ruin them.

August 13, 2008  08:28 AM ET

Snow is praying that Gordon will be the next Bruce Boudreau. Unfortunately doesn't have a 22 year old hot shot LW from Moscow on his team.

BTW, I think Garth Snow looks a lot like Bruce Wayne. Could he be?????

August 13, 2008  08:46 AM ET

Let's give the guy a year and a half.

This organization is such a joke. Limited talent, obnoxious GM and ownership that has no clue about hockey. In fact, isn't one of the owners of this team in jail?

Wow, this organization is a pure winner!

August 13, 2008  08:55 AM ET

I am a fan of:

Mets- Gm only will go after Latinos
Heat- Gm fires coaches when team gets good
Islanders- Gm only hires other ex goalies
Lions- Well, no need to get into that!!

August 13, 2008  09:41 AM ET

The Islanders hired this guy because he took the job. They were turned down by;
Scotty Bowman
Mats Sundin (though he hasn't officially said yes or no yet)
Pete Rose
S. Baldrick
Biccus Diccus
Nancy Reagan
John Edwrads' girlfriend
Whoppi Goldberg
Patrick Swayze
All 27 Baldwin brothers

Gordon, as predicted, got the offer. And, it was pretty obvious why. First, how could Snow ever be in any real command position (the sense of being so is obviously something he needs greatly - even though it's just psychological, not real) with either of the two 'candidates' who had had previous coaching history. Then, really, in addition, neither of those two fit anything the I's might do - Snow, not withstanding. They were the only two desperate enough to stay in the running, among more established possibles who opted out wisely early - and they weren't the best.
On the other hand, Gordon, while an unknown to some extent, can be directed (read: controlled -at least at first) by Snow because ... yes, Snow is in the position of allowing Gordon to make the big jump. So, to begin with, Gordon has to be indebted to Snow. AND, he has no previous baggage and probably was a pretty good coach for that league. He might turn out to be a good NHL coach too. BUT, here's where he'll have to be careful. If he does, somehow, turn out to be a good coach, that achievement will put Snow back into that uncomfortable area of not having total control again. If Snow couldn't stand that Nolan had any resistence to his ideas(and Nolan had to have been easy, compared to most, in terms of getting along), can you imagine if Gordon turns out well and begins to have some geneuine authority. Ultimately, whatever Snow's good or bad traits are as a GM - and the worst was firitng Nolan for the bad reasons he had - in the end, when the Islanders or if the Islanders ever start emerging from this decade or two of down on the bottom, and they might, that's when Snow must go. Wang Chung note. :)

Why Islanders hired Gordon?

It's easy! Because Snow Job couldn't handle dealing with real NHL coaches! This Gordon guy better come equipped with a good set of knee pads or he'll be out on his ear before he gets his feet wet!

August 13, 2008  11:41 AM ET

The coaches that were out there and available: Tortorella,Quenneville,Hartley,Maurice...wanted no part of that three-ring circus in Long Island.Snow had to settle with Gordon...time will tell if this is a smart move or not.
