McGee to keep Aggies' QB job

They were linked for two seasons, the Texas A&M head coach and his starting quarterback. While Dennis Franchione has become a distant, painful memory for many, Stephen McGee remains alive, well and productive under new coach Mike Sherman. One of the benefits of the coaching change/housecleaning was supposed to be Jerrod Johnson finally getting an offensive showcase. Right idea. Wrong QB. When Sherman announces his starting quarterback by week's end, McGee's name will probably be first on the depth chart for the third straight season. McGee has been sharp from the beginning of training camp, despite a lingering case of dropsies by the receivers. He loves Sherman's multiple pro-style offense, which includes concepts ranging from the old I-formation to liberal touches of the West Coast offense. Now he'll finally get a chance to show the skills that set state Class 3A passing records at Burnet. His senior numbers: 3,579 yards, 47 touchdowns, three interceptions.

As he should. I thought Sherman was crazy for not giving it to him in the first place. He puts up solid numbers and the guy has led the Aggies to wins when they needed it the most.

As a Texas fan, I wish he wouldn't ge the job; that guy's killed us three years in a row (we were lucky we had Vince to bail us out one year, but I'd rather forget about the last two....)

I don't anything about J. Johnson but the idea that McGee would lose his job is a bit asinine, unless this JJ kid is an off-the-chain type athlete. McGee can play but I think the Aggies are going to struggle this year.

He fits the system well and it shouldn't have taken this long.

Johnson has be compared to Vince Young with a lil better passing ability, but a lil less running ability.

I think A&M should have stuck with Slocum. The guy had the A&M program doing well year after year. A few down years should have been tolerated. Now A&M is on the coaching carousel, like my 'skers. You're better off finding a guy you believe in and sticking with him.

I predict a sort run by Sherman, followed by another "high profile" head coach hire.

LSM, how can you say he fits the system? Sherman is retooling the offense away from the option where McGee is most dangerous. Turning him into a dropback passer is doing no one any good.

He shredded secondaries at his high school...he should have been passing more...
