Feely takes parting shot at Dolphins

Kicker Jay Feely isn't convinced. The former Dolphins captain, who was waived Tuesday less than a year after posting the best single-season field-goal percentage in team history, isn't sold that he was beaten out by an undrafted rookie free agent this training camp. Feely's age? He can buy that as a reason for getting cut. His outspoken personality? Maybe. But not his ability -- not compared to rookie Dan Carpenter -- which coach Tony Sparano said was the sole reason for the team's decision Tuesday. Miami's coaches apparently saw something different. When charting both kickers through training camp, Sparano said ''the numbers weren't close'' between the two. Feely was clearly turned off by Sparano's comments, essentially because the tone during a meeting earlier in the day was not consistent with what he later told reporters. ''He said all positive things to me, told me I did everything he asked of me, worked as hard as I could,'' Feely said. ``If I needed any recommendations, he said he'd be happy to do that. I don't know that [personality] had any impact on the decision,'' Feely said. ``But it had an impact on their aloofness toward me from the beginning." He noted Carpenter, before Tuesday, had made 93 percent of 40 attempts, including 23 in a row. Without providing Feely's numbers, he also pointed to Carpenter's edge in the range between 42 and 49 yards, again noting that competition ``wasn't really close.''

Giving the Dolphins the finger eh?! Nice touch T&R! Look, if your not contributing, your not going to play like in any sport. If the team doesn't believe you can get it done.......well, your out the front door.

He's a kicker for God's sake. He's suppose to travel from team to team to team. That's what kickers do. Tomorrow he'll be playing for Cincy, Atlanta, Buffalo, etc. What's to worry about. Shut up and kick!!!

August 13, 2008  07:39 AM ET

Bill Parcells was involved here. Of course Feeley had a point.

August 13, 2008  07:46 AM ET

as long as he isn't washed up like mike vanderjagt he'll find a job.

August 13, 2008  07:50 AM ET

He'll get on another team. Kickers always make the rounds. If he gets onto a dome-team, he'll extend himself even longer.

August 13, 2008  07:51 AM ET

The only kicker I ever felt sorry for was Scott Norwood.

August 13, 2008  08:12 AM ET

Laces out, Dan!

August 13, 2008  08:20 AM ET

Calm down Jay, you will be kicking in the NFL this year....You might want to work on those kick offs though...Jeesh.

August 13, 2008  08:26 AM ET

miami always boots decent kickers.

August 13, 2008  09:04 AM ET

pw,
love the play on words. :)

August 13, 2008  09:21 AM ET

Jay is probably on the phone with Dan Snyder right now. The Redskins kicking game is atrocious, Feeley is an immediate upgrade.

August 13, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Another saga in Miami..I'm sure Feely can get on another team...

Did you really want to play for the Dolphins again anyway? I know, they never scored so you didn't actually have to do your job but still got paid. But honestly, do you look at yourself in the morning and say WOW, I am glad I am a Dolphin???

August 13, 2008  09:57 AM ET

Since when do we talk about kickers this much?

August 13, 2008  10:18 AM ET

a kicker with a big mouth is just the worst

... and the Housecleaning in Miami goes on. Hope Parcells really has a plan and not only plays favourites... his track record says he does ....

August 13, 2008  11:47 AM ET

Oh boy Feely those comments are really "kicking" the Dolphins when they are down !!!

It's his big mouth. Parcells think Kickers are the least important people on the face of the earth. An outspoken kicker? No chance. He picked up replacements as soon as he started actions, trying to get rid of this loudmouth.
