Two weeks ago we received the following short e-mail: "Hello Rumors, I have it on good authority that Kasey Keller has signed with MLS. No idea where he will go but probably Seattle." And now we have this announcement by the Sounders stating they will reveal a mystery player on the 14th of this month: "You're invited to join Seattle Sounders FC in a special player announcement on Thursday, Aug. 14 at Qwest Field. Gates will open at 2 p.m. You won't want to miss this historic event as the Sounders FC adds another to their 2009 roster."

He'll be good for them. He's not a shadow of what he was but he's still a great leader and good player to build a side around. Plus it's good to see him back in the states.

It makes sense to me.

I loved catching Sounder games when I was living at Ft. Lewis, WA. They always seemed to have a good team, and some of the matches they played at Seahawk stadium were awesome. I hope this move keeps them competitive.

Would they do a big stadium introduction for Kasey Keller? Yes, he's a great player, but why would anybody go to see that. I would think they would only do that for a much more high profile player.

with teams like seattle and now rumors of portland making the move from usl to mls it seems like a great idea to start thinking about promotion and relegation. MLS would thrive on the uniqueness of the concept and would make the season so much more meaningful. The USL has some fantastic organizations and what a great way to build talent in this country.

Kasey, you shoulda come to MLS 2 years ago when we gave a cr*p.

Hutz, I completely agree with you. A stadium intro for Keller seems HIGHLY out of place. But who else.....

a qwest field introduction for keller? i could only imagine what the sounders would put together if they were to sign henry next year, as rumors suggest.

MLS will never go to a promotion-relegation system. They have all ready said this. The reason promotion-relegation does not exist in U.S. or Canadian major professional sports is because it would drop the value of teams which owners do not want to see happen. The reason cities fight for expansion franchises in every sport or attempt to move teams to their city is the guarantee of being "big time". Also, TV plays a huge role in no relegation/promotion in MLS. Could you imagine what ABC/ESPN would do if LA Galaxy or NY, their two biggest TV markets went down? It would cost them millions. Let's keep dreaming soccer fans...but it's not going to happen.

I could see it happening. But there are a lot of good keepers with ties to the Pacific Northwest. No disrespect to Keller, but there might be two or three other keepers from the area who are better than him now -- or almost as good. And those guys would be a lot cheaper.

If Henry goes to the MLS it will be to NY not Seattle. What team was Keller playing for before? Was it a German team?

August 14, 2008  08:12 AM ET

keller is part of fulham's squad... i doubt we'll see keller sign with Seattle as he'd probably request too much... however, i dont know the allocation rules, the team may get him for that (returning player n' all)....

either way, i wouldnt waste a DP slot on him, and even the money with allocation would be pricey for the cap.... there are plenty of quality GK's... if keller was smart he'd request 200-250k and sit happy with all the money he's made in europe...

So very true. I've been making that argument myself. Let's not also forget all the state, local and tax dollars spent to build a stadium. And all the revenue a single sporting event brings in to the community. Like all sports in the American landscape, the league will have 30-32 teams, 2 divisions, and a playoff. It actually will work better that way. If they simply called the Supporter's Shield something else, you have your "single table" winner. And the playoffs renamed to, oh I don't know, "The MLS Champion's League" would also satisfy many people. We already have our own FA Cup in the US Open Cup...

Robbie Fowler talks
Keller will come at lower price
Offering Zidane millions, no reply
Surely they won't go so crazy for Keller...Must be one of the other two perhaps?
Well, let's be surprised.

Ronaldinho looks like a whale at the olympics...

You mean like the NFL????
There are no teams in LA.

It's been horrendous for the NFL.;)

Here is the thing with MLS they should want bad goalies.
Because then there is more scoring.

Keller may qualify because he's bound to deteriorate at his age.

Now, he played in the premiership, which if he signs with MLS, and Guzan, Howard, and Friedel are all in the premiership, what does that say about the quality of MLS teams?

If there was no salary cap, MLS could compete in the premiership. Not against the big 4, but if they had $5-6 million to spend they'd be solid and have some needed depth which is lacking in the MLS.

That is honestly why the galaxy are so bad is all their money is in 3 players and none in a 5th defender to spell the others and little in quality defenders to keep the game close.

This is good for the guy, he is still a good keeper, and im sure he will shine for a couple years before hangin up his boots, good for him, its always nice to be able to retire in your hometown, he was a very good keeper in the league and did spurs, and fulham very well...
