Chelsea FC has scheduled a press conference for noon today, where a big announcement is expected to be made. If recent reports are any indication, the press conference could be to announce the acquisition of Brazlian star Robinho from Real Madrid. According to reports out of England, Chelsea has increased its offer for Robinho to $46.8 million, a bid Real Madrid looks poised to accept.

I really hope it's true, apart from finally getting this over with in T & R. I do think he is undervalued at Madrid and I hope he is successful in the EPL, he seems to not be too motivated lately with Madrid.

Why on earth would RM want to get rid of him now? I thought this was contingent on them getting Ronaldo...if they drop Robinho it seems like they'd have a pretty big hole to fill up front.

They got Van der Vaart, and they're banking on CR next year. They'll "make do" in the meantime and bank the coin from selling Robinho to finance buying CR next season. Great news for Madrid long term, and great news for Chelsea as well. Looks like the only club that doesn't win is ManU ... as it should be :)

Agreed Tuck, that's why they signed Van der Vaart, but i think (hope) this will hurt RM more than they think, and RM even though they have only played a few friendlies haven't looked that great, should be very interesting and exciting Spanish and English leagues this year. VISCA BARCA!

LOL, the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT was Frank signed a new contract. Well done T&R.

Yeah it was Lampard not Robinho. Maybe they will schedule another press conference tomorrow.

Totally ridiculous price for Robinho. I thought Valencia's asking price for Villa was extreme but this takes the cake. Beyond the fact that Robinho's not THAT good, the more pressing fact is that he's not that durable either! If he couldn't stand up to the rigors of playing in La Liga how on earth is he going to fare any better in a much more demanding and physical league like the EPL?

Robinho's game is about flare and style, which to some extent could be said of Ronaldo. The BIG difference being that Ronaldo is bigger and physically stronger than Robinho and can withstand the punishment and hard tackles. Robinho takes one good challenge and he falls to the ground as if he's auditioning for a role in a Brazilian telenovela.

If Chelsea go through with this move it will make the Schevchenko signing look like a minor blip on the radar screen. Abramovich would be better served "wasting" the money developing a stronger youth academy at home, building a state of the art training facility/academy in South America and further marketing the team in Asia, China in particular.

Love the picture they used, quite fitting to capture Robinho doing what he does best, diving.

August 13, 2008  01:34 PM ET

too bad it was lampard and not Robinho

August 13, 2008  01:47 PM ET

It could be great if this goes through. less playing time for current wingers/forwards for chelsea...like joe cole...who could complete a move to 'pool.

Lamps over Robinho anyday, especially in the Prem.

Love the picture, Would love to see Robinho in the EPL. The physicality may not suit his style of play but I think he'd juke some defenders right out of their kits.

Five year contract for Lampard on more cash? Chelsea really have too much money.

August 13, 2008  04:17 PM ET

Damn. I really like Robinho but being a Gunners fan this forces me to now view him as the scum. Sort of sucks. Then again...at least he is leaving the most annoying team of all...Real Madrid.

August 13, 2008  05:44 PM ET

Chelsea would have to offer 50 million to even pique Calderon's interest in transferring Robinho away from Madrid. Especially now.

August 13, 2008  06:02 PM ET

Real Madrid could use the money to get David Villa or maybe Benzema next season

August 13, 2008  09:26 PM ET

On one hand I'm sad to see him go, but one the other I don't really care. I'm just ready for the season to start so we can win our third Liga in a row and maybe get a sniff of the Champions League final. The Copa del Rey would be nice too.

Robinho is acting like there's really something like loyalty in pro sports anymore. They're all slaves or mercenaries or whatever you wanna call them to clubs these days. I'm not saying it's right, I just don't like to see a player whine when forced to face the business end of this game head on. His attitude should be all about proving Madrid wrong so that he can look Calderon in the eye everyday like "What the hell were you thinking, man?" Of course I'm saying this because I don't want him to leave but I think it's bad business on both sides. What do you expect in these days of lost loyalty?

August 13, 2008  11:28 PM ET

that price is in US dollars, so divide by roughly 2 to get his valuation in pounds. robinho is quality. granted he may not stand up in the EPL, but whatever let him come. i love when teams spend money and still dont win. christiano will do it again this year. just wait til we sign berbatov

robinho looks kinda small, i wonder if hes gonna get out muscled

then again, if you have pace, you should be fine
