Who's leading 49ers QB race?
For the third straight practice, Shaun Hill was a bystander as the mystery of who will be the 49ers' starting quarterback continued Tuesday. Coach Mike Nolan stuck to his mantra that it's a three-man race between Hill, 2005 top pick Alex Smith and J.T. O'Sullivan, a competition Hill calls an "emotional roller coaster as well as a professional roller coaster." Of the three, O'Sullivan appears to have the inside track. He started the first preseason game (don't read too much into that, Nolan said) and has taken first-team snaps for the sixth straight practice.

Maybe Nolan should ask the Ouiji Board since he can't seem to decide.

Has anyone seen this O'Sullivan guy play a meaningfull game ? Im not into college ball. Smith had some decent games but actually regressed last year. Since he has talent none the less, he should at least get a fair chance to compete to start. Some better receivers than the 3 Bs (Bruce, Battle, Bryant) woudnt hurt either.

This is never a good sign when a journeyman - sorry, "vagabond" - QB comes in and looks better than your designated "golden boy." If this hold and Alex doesn't improve, this will prove the biggest bust at Qb drafting since Ryan Leaf. (SF could have had Rodgers who, while he is yet unproven, is at least starting for GB.)

O'Sullivan was a bone head while at UC Davis. Frat boy that could not keep out of trouble. However, he was a gutsy kid and in no way a pansy. However, Martz knows QB's, and if he is playing O'Sullivan, you really have to wonder about the future of Smith, Hill, Nolan, and the 49ers.

Remains to be seen. If the QB "merry-go-round" continues it good be McCown or Beck or some other castoff !!!

I wish Martz and Nolan would make up their damn mind and pick a starter. Then whoever they pick can get a majority of the reps, build a relationship with the receivers, and learn the offense. This merry-go-round is not doing anybody any good.

Shaun Hill sure looked efficient for the Niners at the end of last season. I know this is a new system and all but if I was a Niner fan, which thankfully I'm not I'd be pretty depressed in thinking O'Sullivan is even being considered for a starting job. A 3 way race for a starting QB position sounds like a bad problem to have because it basically means they all stink equally.

Nolan is a **** idiot. I mean really, Alex has had 4 different OC in 4 years. Of course he regressed last year. He messed up his shoulder and didn't play. The 49ers still have one of the worst lines in the NFL, and a total **** for a head coach. Alex should just ask to be released. **** Nolan! In the last preseason game, Alex leads a nice little drive and gets the 49ers down to like the 4. Keep in mind, it's a preseason game, what does Nolan do? Brings in the field goal team? Why? Why not give Alex a chance?

Rog W, funny you mention Beck. San Fran is the best place for him. Both Cam Cameron and Mike Martz (who is now in SF) fell in love with Beck. They are both from the Air Coryell school of offense, and he fit their system to a T. Cameron turned out to be bumbling idiot at heach coach but is an excellent QB evaluator and developer, so is Martz (Kitna 4,000 yards are you kidding me?).
Martz was livid when Millen would not draft beck, and traded out and picked up Stanton later. Martz showed it by treating Stanton like crap, changing all of his mechanics with no explanation.
I think Beck under Martz would be ideal for all parties involved.

Or to put it differently, neither of the three is better than the worst one. And when you bring a pretty non-descript journeyman into the mix and say he's the best you have, that means you got big problems at QB. O'Sullivan might be better than before, but his track record doesn't say that. The really culpable one here was the one that invested so much in Smith who, even without injury, did not look all that good to me. (There was some sort of weird love affair thing going on here when - I think it was the general manager of the team in 05 - went into raptures about Smith. Bad, bad judge of talent. Smith just doesn't look that good. Maybe he should go to team like Seattle with a Qb guru there. Martz isn't that.) Forget "Jerry" Garcia though: the Niners don't need that aggravation.

I don't think we can put most of the blame on Smith for progressing or regressing, Nolan has hired 4 different coordinators for the guy and the latest has one of the hardest systems to learn.
In addition, I'm still looking for O'Sullivan's jersey to become available since my Smith one won't be in style anymore.

All the receivers have stated they don't know,
You got to have one guy (QB) to get feeling with,
run routes with, but since all don't know who will
be throwing or running offensive team,
its only says Nolan HAS to go ASAP.
Fire him before season starts.
The 3 stooges, I mean 3 QB's are like high school.
It will be a long season for 49er fans, and the only
thing to look forward to is how far up in frist round draft
pick will go, I am guessing maybe 4th or 5th,
Heck they might get #1 over all, the way things are going.
I feel bad for them than the Jets or Green Bay.
Speaking of Green Bay, Rodgers might have a killing,
I mean pay back time when Green bay meets S.F. this weekend,
49ers do not look good, even this early:p

No way dudes he injured his foot already,
I can't believe the 49ers resigned Alex Smith
to contract extension, on one hand Martz may want TJ,
but Nolan is pressing for Smith, he has too,
Lame duck season, bye bye Nolan,
The sooner the better!
