Did 76ers overpay for Iguodala?

By all accounts, the 76ers' Andre Iguodala did well. Multiple sources confirmed reports as "reasonably accurate" of an agreement in principle for six seasons and $80 million, including an additional $5 million in incentive clauses and an opt-out clause after the fifth season. The deal between Rob Pelinka, Iguodala's agent, and Sixers president/general manager Eddie Stefanski was agreed to yesterday, sources said, after Pelinka and Stefanski met earlier in the week in Los Angeles. The contract is expected to be signed early next week. Asked to assess the situation, a veteran scout said, "I'm a little shocked, but this is a lot of money. But Iguodala made out by gambling. I didn't think he'd get that much. He's a good player and he'd be in the rotation of all the teams, but there are teams he wouldn't start for. To me, it's a lot for a guy who hasn't been an All-Star, who hasn't been out of the first round of the playoffs."

Um...what was that?

August 14, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Tracy McGrady and Yao haven't been out of first round either. So you want to pay them 15$/hr??
What a dumb report!!! That's the market rate for an athletic player, that's what they'll have to pay him, period!! Esp with the Euros making very dangerous moves to attract NBA stars.

August 14, 2008  10:39 AM ET

luxury tax down the road?

August 14, 2008  10:43 AM ET

Bulls tickets are overpriced too. I'm sure the same in Philly. What of it? People will turn out, advertisers payup, ownership collects a lot more than 80M/6. it's the way it is. i like Andre. He's not a star, but he's real solid all-around. he also plays hard - good for him - career is short, get paid.

August 14, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Way too much... great talent, but not 80mil worth, unfortunately, someone else would ahve paid it if they didnt... just the bus right now..prob cuban lol

August 14, 2008  11:25 AM ET

This gives Philadelphia the opportunity to lock up its core for the forseeable future. This team will be heard from. I think they are the 3rd best team in the East.

August 14, 2008  11:28 AM ET

You could give him $100 mil and they'd still be crap. Don't get me wrong...I think he's a great player but really...they're way down on the list as far as contenders go.

August 14, 2008  11:32 AM ET

When there is no one else left on the market the players can somehow demand more money than there worth. This is the same type of money deal that essential Deron Williams and Chris Paul were offered and AI2 is not at that level. I mean come on, but overpaid players is very common.

August 14, 2008  11:34 AM ET

Laughs................... you wouldnt take the money? Never mind keep forgeting people are so open minded , other then what they push on others.........:/

August 14, 2008  11:45 AM ET

Well, I'm happy that he's staying with us... We will do well this year... He isn't overpayed... This is a guy who will get better every season... Go 76ers Go!

August 14, 2008  11:56 AM ET

Yeah they probably did but by making that move for Brand they had no choice but to keep Iguodala happy. The Sixers just made themselves a team that can probably win in 3 seasons.

2.8 mil for last year and 80 mil for the next 6 years = 82.8 mil for 7 years or about 11.8 mil a year for 7 years. Not too much difference from the 57 mil for 5 years deal they offered last year, 57 mil divided by 5 years would have been 11.4 mil .
So all in all not a terribly bad deal for the Sixers

OK, Boston's #1, Cleveland or Detroit at #2. You're saying Philly will be better than either one of them? I don't think so.
