Will Tigers' cuts include Magglio?

Mike Ilitch has been typically silent, typically reclusive during a season that was supposed to have been the Tigers owner's $138 million crown jewel. It does not, however, mean Ilitch's voice has not been heard inside Comerica Park's offices. It has, apparently at high volume. The front office has taken a couple direct hits from the boss, and shock waves have been felt all the way to manager Jim Leyland's office, which might have had something to do with Leyland's 20-minute verbal lashing of his team before a nightmare of a game Aug. 3 at Tampa Bay. What matters is not Ilitch's anger. What counts is how he will approach his team from a business standpoint heading into 2009 and beyond. And what this season's disaster almost certainly will mean is that the Tigers will cut their astounding payroll by a heavy sum -- perhaps by $40 million or more. And what one wonders is whether the Tigers can sufficiently prune their paychecks in any way other than to trade Magglio Ordonez, a marketable player with a big but movable contract.

August 14, 2008  09:55 AM ET

Releasing him would be a travesty

August 14, 2008  09:56 AM ET

Cutting his nasty **** hair would be a start ...

August 14, 2008  09:57 AM ET

I hope the Twins look at him with all seriousness.

August 14, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Another option would be to get rid of Willis......the guy is a joke.

I bet you would! But you guys don't like payroll and he is well paid.

August 14, 2008  10:00 AM ET

Magglio helped build that team...get rid of that lard bucket Miguel Cabrera...

Sad but true............the Twins could be a good team ifin they would loosen the purse strings. What am I sayin.....they already are a good team. Not great but good. Probably not even good enough.

I second that emotion.

I-Rod was one of the first pieces, and he is gone, they are dismantling. Are they going to rebuild around Cabrera?

"If Ordonez has 135 starts or 540 plate appearances (at-bats, walks, hit-by-pitch, etc.) in 2009, his option years for 2010 ($15 million) and 2011 ($15 million) are guaranteed. If he has a combined 270 starts and 1,080 plate appearances during 2008-09, those last two option years kick in." Hmmmmm..... wonder if he can be plugged into the Yankees' outfield somehow. He would fit right in he is at least 34 years old and has a .109 BA in the WS. okay, okay he was only in one world series and that is one more than ARod.
But he does have a yearly fielding average that is better than the league average most years and does have good offensive capabilites. And at 15 mil is a bargain in today's market. Now if he doesn't have a fear of walls.... just thinking out loud is all.

Better than the Yankees right now and they just might sneak by the everyone for that wild card spot if they don't in fact win their divison. Once in the MLB tourny anything is possible.
