Patriots interested in Lynch

They wanted to get faster on defense this year, and at the same time inject some much-needed youth into the mix. The early returns from training camp indicate the objective has been achieved. So why, then, were the Patriots hosting 36-year-old safety John Lynch on a free agent visit yesterday? Unexpected health issues at the position, combined with the unexpected availability of a gritty nine-time Pro Bowl selection whom the Patriots pursued four years ago, have led the team in such a direction. Whether the Patriots sign Lynch, who was released by the Broncos Aug. 1, remains to be seen. It's always possible that a flag was raised in a physical - Lynch had two concussions during the 2006 season and has had numerous neck injuries, including surgery in 2004 - which could put the kibosh on such a move. Or perhaps Lynch has second thoughts and decides his career is over.

Ugh...will the Jets and Farve please knock this NE team from their perch!

Sorry Lynch, but is your health not more important than another
year? You were a stud in Denver now retire.

Haha, you've got to be kidding. New Englands biggest problem will be how to afford to pay all their DB's next year after Favre helps them fatten up their Int. stats.

Thanks for recognizing obtuse humor dismilmaya. Seriously though I am just sick and tired of that division being ruled by a team from Mass. Will Buff or NYJ ever rise up again?

August 14, 2008  08:25 AM ET

lynch and harrison in the same secondary. man 5-10 years ago, wideouts league wide would have refused to catch anything deeper than 10 yards against the pats.

but its 2008. father time owns them both now.

What's with NE going after old players? They are looking like the Redskins of old now.

August 14, 2008  08:41 AM ET

In related news, the Patriots are looking at Earl Morrell as a backup to Tom Brady.

August 14, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Funny - heard Bubba Smith was making a come back too.

Hey jackman, sweetie, I suffered through 30+ years of Patriots suckage, let me have at least a FEW more years of success. :) Seriously though I feel sorry for the Bills. Four Super Bowl appearances = four Super Bowl losses. Maybe next year, okay?

August 14, 2008  09:38 AM ET

It fits - The Cheatriots love to go after players that are way past the prime age for the NFL.

August 14, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Does this dude think that the Patriots is the rest home for old players? Wait, in some cases they are...:)

August 14, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Lynch is NOT the player he was in TB and he will NOT be the shadow of the player he was in Denver for NE. Sometimes veterans aren't worth it. Just ask the Jets later this season.

No can do, Jackman. The Jets lack talent and most of all coaching. If anyone dies it this year in the AFC it'll be San Diego.

Unlike the Jets "braintrust" (used very loosely), the Pats use vets like Lynch to add chart depth as well as a resource to give the starters some plays off. The Jets season will rise or fall on the older vets they signed, the Pats will use theirs sparingly and wisely.

Word had it that the aging corps of linebackers specifically, but the defence in general was of particular concern to the Pats' "braintrust." That's why they drafted Mayo and Wheatley and also why they're saying bye-bye to Seau. (Of course, Bruschi is very fragile.) So I am unconvinced by what you say.

He will end up signing in N.E and bet he will have the biggest season of his life. I don't now but it has been proven you go to N.E and you automatically become a better player and of course, you got at least in my own opinion 90% chance to go to the superbowl!! Is got to be that nice N.E atmosphere i used to love so much before i moved down south..

August 14, 2008  11:47 AM ET

Hope NE does not waste their time w/ Lynch, he is washed up...time to retire...understanding them wanting backup for harrison but they need someone heathier

Sorry Lady......time is up. I do remember the thrashing they got in the SB years ago by the Bears. Tough year to play the Bears. Okay Okay...since you called be sweetie, how about 1 more year of above decency and then Moss and Brady must go elsewhere.
