New Isles coach thinking big

The incoming rookie coach wants his Islanders, who haven't won a playoff round since 1993, to think big - immediately. "There's a huge light at the end of the tunnel, but that being said, the first step is that our team has to understand from Day 1 that you have to have the belief that you're going to win the Stanley Cup, and to do that, believe you can win every game," Scott Gordon said yesterday. "You don't have to look any further than the New York Giants, close to .500 at the middle of the season."

What else was he supposed to say......

What he doesn't realise yet is that the huge light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train called the Snowang Express.

Hahahahahahahahaha, NYI winning the Stanley Cup! Or even making the Playoffs!

someone needs to tell this guy what team he is actually going to be behind the bench for....

I like this guy's attitude. Just like Therrien Rocks comment....what else is he supposed to say? If he said anything other than those things, you may as well just stick a fork in the NYI right now.

Of course, he has to come in very RAH RAH, but he should maybe temper his remarks a bit> Set smaller goals? Like:
We hope to win some big games this year? We hope to get a new GM that has an iota of a clue? We hope our team owner grows a few active brain cells in the next number of months? We hope our sport as a whole can line up und smack that idiot commisioner in the face like they did to that women in the movie AIRPLANE

"New Isles coach thinking big" as in big pain Garth Snow?

August 14, 2008  10:39 AM ET

Gordon might be a good NHL coach - then again, he might not. Being a good coach for the Providence Bruins doesn't translate into immediately being a good or even competent coach for any team on the NHL level.
That said, he absolutely HAS to remember, if he's to stay, to follow Snow's lead... always. And, if he happens to be successful immediately (whether by accident or ability) he'll immediately be in danger. Snow apparently can't have anyone else around who might have some authority and worse, might develop some independent views. A very very narrow and dotted line must Gordon follow and even success won't help.
Whether Gordon turns out to be good or bad, I think Snow must go. And Gordon is good, then the only chance he'll have to show it is if Snow has been swept away by Wang Chung.
WANG CHUNG, do you hear this, SNOW MUST GO, SNOW MUST GO, SNOW MUST GO. :) :)

August 14, 2008  10:57 AM ET

If he honestly believes that then Wang has already hypnotized him.

UtleyMVP08 seems to think the Islanders haven't made the playoffs in 50 years or something. I'm pretty sure the Islanders have made the playoffs in 4 of the last 6 years. They may not have won a series but making the playoffs still counts.

Just another typical Philly fan comment.

Spiny Norman

I like it. I realize the AHL is not the NHL of course, but he's already used to success and why not shoot for the stars from the get go? I'm sure he's well aware that the Isles are a few years away from serious contention but I'm guessing the vets that are there will be on notice and that their picks will be expected to pick it up in a hurry ( sorry for the alliteration ). He's young and, I assume, talented and hopefully this is one part of the Islander's problems taken care of.

Utley MVP has balls considering that city is loserville...uh except for the Soul. Impressive arena bowl victory

ATLJAMES
1) At this time at least, Islander fans haven't got a whole lot of room for mocking. Having said that;
2) It's pretty sad when all you have to hang your hat on is arena football
What is that any way? We can't get soccer to take off in this country, even though evry kid under 12 seems to play it, but we'll watch a bunch of scrubby NFL/CFL rejects play on an astro turfed hockey rink?
This is a stupid game

Unless Snow proves as inept as his predecssor and trades them away

Like Spiny said...guy has to come in with a RAH RAH attitude...but might have wanted to scale it back a bit. Try for "making playoff run"...not "winning cup".
Don't try to raise expectations too high above reality

August 14, 2008  03:44 PM ET

He's here to develop the kids. That takes time, and your coaching record will take a beating.
bgm

That's right and so what if you're coaching record takes an initial beating? That's happend to pleny of good coaches across the sports spectrum. Spiny's right, it's up to the GM here. If he doesn't pull a Dan Snyder / Vinny Cerrato ( sorry I know more football front office than hockey ) and hit the panic button then I think this guy has a good shot. I hope he does well.

August 14, 2008  04:46 PM ET

Gotcha. And to clarify, when I said hit the panic button I meant not to fire this guy prematurely as opposed to trading his picks away as Spiny mentioned above.
As a Jersey kid, I remember the Islanders being the perfect antidote to the fatcat Rangers in the mid - 70's and I hope this franchise can rise like the phoenix out of the ashes.

New Isles coach thinking big

Well, Scotty boy! Think as big as you like! Just don't tell your boss what you're thinking! It'll get your arse fired! Because, on Long Island, if they want your thoughts or opinion .... they'll give'em to you!

August 14, 2008  05:29 PM ET

Personally I think there ought to be a rule that you have to go out with the same rah rah rah attitude that you had when you got hired -- when you get fired ---- it'd make things more interesting.
