Who's The Galaxy's next coach?

Cobi Jones has the Galaxy coaching job in the meantime, but underline that interim tag. Jones would be a tremendous choice if he had a few more years of coaching experience. He is, in essence, the Galaxy, but with only nine months under his belt as an assistant, his time might lie in the future. Of course, if the 2008 Galaxy suddenly begins playing like the 1998 Galaxy, Cobi might be the man right now. The Internet has been abuzz with rumors about Bruce Arena being a possible, and even probable, coaching choice, but his name has not even been mentioned in AEG's corridors of power and the former U.S. national team coach is more likely to get his chance when Philadelphia comes on line in 2010. Peter Nowak, Paul Mariner, Dominic Kinnear, John Spencer, Sigi Schmid are possible candidates.

It's not the COACH, it's the players. Sure a good coach will ease things, make it seamless. You need someone with the experience in the coaching ranks because you have a mega-superstar and the golden boy of MLS on the squad (surrounded by USL caliber players-the average kind).
I think Nowak could handle the pressure but his coaching is still suspect. Bruce Arena proved he's not a miracle worker with the Red Bulls. We don't know enough about how much Paul Mariner knows as a HEAD coach (I'd love to see them try with him). I don't think Kinnear wants to leave Houston, unless he's tired of winning MLS cups and needs a 'challenge'. John Spencer? He didn't take Chicago, what makes you think he'd take LA? Only the money would. Sigi Schmid? They didn't like him AND he was winning!
Yes LA, you need a good coach but more obvious than that you need better players 1-11.

jeevs BS- while id love DP coming to the MLS, there are 2 things we should consider...

1) he can only don a fire jersey: id hate to start disliking DP as im truely enjoy Juvenuts
2) not going to happen... he even told Juve's fans that he's retiring with Juventus...

KEEP COBI....

former players are the way to go...stop bringing in bigger names... i know Nowak has experience but he's intl'ly based now.... and PLS dont get another big name... the league cannot hold their ego's in tact... our salary caps prevent them from getting the players they want.... quite simply MLS coaches are of a different breed... Keep Cobi... he's got the knowledge of the league, player pools, system and the love of LA fans....

It's the manager. It should be Cobi Jones. He could be the Paul Ince of the MLS.

August 14, 2008  12:22 PM ET

I am a bit the opposite as of now, youre not bringin in big names... I didnt know who Nowak was until the olympics.. Looks a bit cocky.. I dont like the idea of Cobi Jones being the #1 he can not do anything for this club. Find an established coach who fits the style of play you want, or bring one in and let him mold the team to his ways. MLS is annoying to watch anyway. Cheers.

I hope Cobi does something good for the team..

August 14, 2008  02:24 PM ET

I really do think they would be foolish not to let Cobi have his shot. I remember reading how frustrated Guilit was with the level of MLS so I can't see how hiring another big name European is going to help. He's only going to get just as frustrated with the talent level here.

COBI & CIENFUEGOS SHOULD COACH TOGETHER!

August 14, 2008  03:30 PM ET

Nooooooo Cobi Jones. They need a new coach ASAP. I would hate to see him as anything but a very temporary stop gap. If they are still thinking about a big name foreign coach they should go for someone with a lot of national coaching experience. They are used to not being able to buy players they want and traveling long distances for games, two problems it seems Ruud had with MLS.

August 14, 2008  05:01 PM ET

Cobi and his entire generation of friends (Lalas, Wynalda, Harkes, Balboa...etc...) should all stay at home. They've taken US soccer as far as they can...now it's time they leave us all alone.

How about the Three Stooges next?

August 14, 2008  06:21 PM ET

Cobi would be the best otion. Get an MLS coach, not a foreign one. It hasn't hurt the other teams to have coaches who are familiar with the game over here.
