Red Sox fail to land big bat

The Red Sox were one of a few teams, according to a major league source, who put in a trade waiver claim on Seattle outfielder Raul Ibanez, but the Sox were not awarded the claim as an undisclosed team with a worse record than the Red Sox had a 48-hour window to work out a deal with the Mariners. The Seattle Times reported that the Tigers and Twins also put in a claim on Ibanez. The Twins were also trying to land Jarrod Washburn so they could move one of their starters to the bullpen. The paper reported that both players - Washburn and Ibanez - were likely staying put in Seattle.

I find it hard to believe that the Twins would go after either of those players. Both are admittedly good players but the fit does not seem right to me at this point.

The Tigers were going to do WHAT? Twins Fan 2 is right not only about his club, it would have been a bad fit for Detroit as well...

He is my favorite player. By the way, I saw his profile on millionaire&celeb dating site """""C e l e b C u p i d.c o m"""""" last week. It is said he is only intersted in dating wealthy young women on that site.

The Red Sox want another OF.

August 15, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Why do the Red Sox want another OF?

August 15, 2008  10:45 AM ET

no , the red sox probably did it to block the rays

August 15, 2008  11:42 AM ET

The mariners are not penny pinchers... THey have the 6th highest payroll in baseball. Heck they gave Silva a 4 year $48M contract. THey seem to OVER Pay for players.

THe M's were hosed beucase I think the Twinkies were just blocking teams from Washburn. They didnt want him and they were not willing to give up ANYONE for washburn. It was just a block move and the M's got hosed.

I agree the sox probably wanted to block the Rays with this claim, but they need to be careful they are not left with any real baggage in these attempts. Blocking waiver deals can be effective, but can also lead teams with players they don't truly want and money spent.

keep an eye on this site:

Agreed with the theory proposed earlier in the thread... it was a move made to block the Rays.

The Dodgers recently claimed Belliard from the Nats on waivers. They have no need for a 2B, but they did it not-so-subtlely as a move to block the D-Backs, who just lost Orlando Hudson to injury, from getting Belliard.

Sometimes, pennant races are won off the field, too...

The Mariners need to get rid of Washburn, he is so OVERPAID. I see why they want to keep Ibanez, he is a valuable bat in their lineup, but the sooner they get rid of Washburn, the sooner they could start reloading their minorleague system with prostpects.

Mariners are idiots

Quick guys/gals, if you hurry, you can catch the last 2:42 of SB XLII on the NFL Network.

We're six games ahead of the Evil Empire...don't need the big bat..

August 15, 2008  07:46 PM ET

God Bless America!!!

August 15, 2008  09:23 PM ET

I would like to see the Red Sox get Washburn for the stretch run and shut Buckholtz done for the year .

August 16, 2008  12:30 AM ET

Hell, no. Sox need Washburn like Lugo needs a contract extension. Byrd is a much better fit. Move Buchholz to the bullpen.
