Capitals become hot ticket in D.C.

Nearly four months after the Washington Capitals rallied to capture the Southeast Division championship, the team continues to cash in on the excitement its improbable run generated. The Capitals had one of the NHL's smallest season ticket bases at the start of last season, believed to be about 5,000, but that figure could double and move the team closer to the league's midpoint by opening night. Jim Van Stone, the Capitals' vice president of ticket sales, said yesterday that 3,800 new full season ticket plans have been sold since late February thanks to a renewed interest in the team and more aggressive sales and marketing strategies. He also said sales of partial plans are similarly brisk, while the renewal rate for existing season ticket holders is about 93 percent, the highest since Ted Leonsis purchased the team in 1999.

Is Jennifer Pottheiser from Getty Images the one that organized this photo shoot? Okay...let's see...Well, he's got a black shirt on...So what color backdrop should we go with to really make things pop?

That girl from Napolean Dynamite could have done a better job. Remember the photo she set up for Uncle Rico. A little effort is all is takes.

Improbable run? They are in the weakest division in the NHL, big deal. And they made the playoffs, but it was a one and done deal. GO FLYERS!!!!

One and done?
I'll let bostomgm address this comment.
Actually, whoever wants to have it, go for it.

"Rallied"? And here I thought the bottom feeders in that division CHOKED to let them in. What was I watching.......

August 15, 2008  07:50 AM ET

I was visiting DC last spring and attended game 7 against the Flyers with my daughter and her friend. The Verizon Arena was hopping, I mean crazy loud. I think we were the only ones not dressed in red. It will be interesting to see if the Caps can keep the place full this year or if the bandwagon has left town.
That Ovechkin kid has an incredible snap shot, no wind up, just an unbelievably quick release. Unlike Cindy Crosby, he will actually hit somebody.

this is a great onservation, and part of the problem...will the bandwagon pull out? Maybe not in DC, but there sure are some other places!

Its a tough market here in DC. Most of the people here relocate from other parts of the country and bring their team with them. Outside of the Skins and United, there isn't much of a rooted fanbase for the local teams.

I'd say this is pretty on the mark. The Caps have gone through cyles through their whole existence though. Maybe they're on a high now...they need to sustain now which, as brilliantly noted above , is a tough sell in a tough town

I actually made money on the Caps-Flyers series. I predicted the Flyers in 7 games. No b.s. I knew the Caps had to come back down to earth. 37-17-7 was TOO scortching.

The Caps would've been better IF they had signed Huet. The guy had a top 3 save percentage the last 3 seasons. Theodore is a downgrade. Other than that. The Caps fans will have a blast watching their team.

The atmosphere in the playoffs this year, was the closest thing to the 1998 Stanley Cup Playoffs that I can remember. It was unbelievable. Hours before the game people lined the streets screaming all kinds of chants. Plus, we'll be even better this year. and as far as our rally goes, winning 11 of our last 12 games??? I consider that a rally. and being the first team to ever come from last place midway through and make the playoffs...that's a rally. I don't give a $#!t what division were in, that's a rally. and we can't control what division we're in so why do people always make it sound like it's the caps fault? The Caps could compete in any division in the entire league and with the new schedule, it will be proven this year.

pens will crush flyers, caps and the rest of the east

August 15, 2008  11:01 AM ET

Good to see the Caps are getting good again. I miss the old playoff rivalery of the Pens/ caps from the 90's. It should get real good again with Sid and Alex going head to head then. That and the dislike Geno and Alex have for one another should make things real interesting for years to come.

August 15, 2008  11:04 AM ET

can it be a rivalry if the same team wins every time

August 15, 2008  11:11 AM ET

It can be a rivalry if the same team wins all the time, because when the other team does win it makes it sweeter for the other fans and players and makes the loser want to win the next one that much more. The Pens lost to the Caps in one playoff series and have lost only 1 game when it's Crosby vs. A. O. and yet those games are some of the best hockey I've seen.

As a big contracytion fan, I certainly don't mean to demean the Caps. Of course they are not to blame for being where they are. Iwant the rest of that division gone.

August 15, 2008  11:45 AM ET

Good for them. I'm a Buffalo fan and I think it's ridiculous Ovechkin gets booed in our rink for that hit on Briere a few years back. I would pay an arm and a leg to see that guy play for our team. Good looking rookies on that team last year too, the future is bright for the Caps.

August 15, 2008  12:13 PM ET

Last year's Caps team was thin to say the least. Without Ovechkin they do zip, zilch, nada.

Hard to say what this year will bring.

True Dat. We also took in a Nats baseball game against the Mets. Beautiful new Stadium, but it was obvious that the Transient nature of the DC area will make it tough to secure any "lifer fans" The game we went to was 3/4 full and it sounded like we were at Shea Stadium. Our section was almost all Mets fans. The cheering was at least two to one for the Mets.
