05:55 AM ET 08.15 | Concord Cannon basketball player Jarell Eddie verbally committed to Virginia Tech, said former Cannon coach Ron Johnson, who accepted a job this week as an assistant coach at Georgia. Eddie, a 6-foot-6 wing player, averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds last season. Johnson said Eddie had eight college offers and chose Virginia Tech over Kentucky, Georgia and Wake Forest.

Good choice. Virginia Tech is the best university out of the list mentioned, from an academic standpoint. Since it is also good for athletics, it beats the others overall - education and sports put together - as well.
I wonder what kind of education the athletes get at Kentucky and Wake Forest. They probably focus almost all their attention on basketball and not much on classes. Some universities are basically basketball clubs.

Greenberg is an ****. and i don't think VT is a better school than WF. Not that it matters - they're all factories.

Off the top of my head, VT is roughly a top 100 university and Wake is roughly top 30. You have no idea what you're talking about.

August 15, 2008  04:36 PM ET

Virginia Tech is the weakest school academically in the ACC. Georgia is definitely a better school too.

Jay L, you should have stopped with the 1st paragraph.

I won't defend Wake, because everyone (aside from you) knows that it is a top tier institution.

As for UK, you are correct. It's definitely a basketball club. Actually, it's more like a Secret Society. Members of this elite club are required to mind their studies before they can set foot on the basketball court. They have to earn the right to play for such an elite "basketball club".

Generally speaking, purely from an academic standpoint, Georgia is tops on that list followed by Va. Tech, Wake and then Kentucky. And not really close with Georgia leading the others by a good bit. Depending on the focus of the list you may see Wake lead Va. Tech but on most lists they will not lead Georgia.

Don't get confused with the SEC football factories and their academic programs. At most SEC schools, the football team is only marginally connected to the university. Many don't go to class with other students, rarely do they eat with other students and almost all have individual tutors to make sure they maintain eligibility. Some athletes are good, if not great students but it is very disconnected from the football aspects of a university.

I would respectfully advise some of you to check your facts before making what you think in your mind to be true. Virginia Tech is a very highly rated academic school, and is without a doubt one of the classiest universities in our nation. The engineering school ranks very high . The campus is beautiful, and the people there are extremely nice. Georgia, Kentucky and Wake Forest are also very fine institutions, and I would think anyone would be proud to have graduated from either of these four outstanding schools.

xatya, I go to the University of Kentucky, and am not an athlete, but there are football players in my classes all the time. They rarely miss class becasue there are punishments for doing so. They only miss an occasional Friday class if the game on Saturday is far away. So before you make up nonsense about them not going to class and not being connected with the school, know you facts

Interesting that Eddie "picked" VT over Kentucky.

Kentucky didn't even offer the kid.

August 19, 2008  02:37 PM ET

Seattlekat,

The article says kentucky made the kid an offer. How do you know they didn't?

August 19, 2008  10:15 PM ET

This guy was never even offered by Kentucky. UK was on him early on, but after Gillispie seen him play, an offer was never extended to him. SO yeah nice how he picked them over kentucky.

August 25, 2008  04:10 PM ET

Well said surfmaster!

August 26, 2008  01:04 PM ET

Kentucky don't need this guy.

August 26, 2008  03:39 PM ET

KY did offer according to the player. He didn't have a good visit. Lexington is not what you call a fun town. You have to understand KY fans. Once they go somewhere else, they are dead. Check the KY grammer (after billy g seen him play and KY don't need this this guy." KY fans are not big on words or teeth.

Briggsky, if you're going to insult grammar, please spell the word correctly. Then, after we can usher you past your lack of knowledge of the greatest college basketball program of all time, we might have you use complete sentences.

US News Ranknings: Kentucky - 116, Virginia Tech - 71, Georgia - 58,and Wake Forest - 28. So by that standard Kentucky is the worst. However, in calculating the ranking, 25% of the score is based on what other "peers" think of that university and only 15% on student selectivity. Personally, rankings mean nothing and a student can get just as good of an education at Kentucky as he/she could at Wake Forest if he/she wants. Its what YOU TAKE from the university, not what the university GIVES YOU.

January 27, 2009  02:44 PM ET

Briggsky, your just mad because he didn't have Louisville on his list.

Ignorant Comments. The only thing that bothers me is that Kentucky is the only team listed in the title of the Article as a loser.
