Yankees may return Joba to bullpen

Joba Chamberlain begins a throwing program today under the supervision of the Yankees' training and coaching staffs at Yankee Stadium. The two biggest questions surrounding the pitching face of the troubled franchise are: 1) Will the Yankees' place in the standings determine if Chamberlain returns? and 2) If he does come back, will he go back into the bullpen? The Yankees have discussed returning Chamberlain to the bullpen to reduce the stress on the right shoulder that was invaded by rotator cuff tendinitis and landed him on the disabled list Aug. 5.

why would ya risk bringin him back this year?

August 15, 2008  06:12 AM ET

The season is lost. Start fresh in 2009. He should have never left the pen.

August 15, 2008  06:25 AM ET

Hate to see him back in the pen but it makes sense if he pitches at all this year. Still not giving up hope as a Yankee fan.

August 15, 2008  06:44 AM ET

Would love to see him remain a starter but not at a risk to his career. This season is basically over, let him rehab till next year before making any decisions.

August 15, 2008  07:15 AM ET

I agree with LA Boy. Chamberlain never should have left the bullpen in the first place. It is much easier to find a starter than it is to find a set-up man. How many games have the Yanks lost, not just this year but in th past, because the set-up man could not get the game to Mariano Rivera? A few I am sure. In addition, Rivera is not getting any younger. Perhaps Chamberlain could be groomed as the heir apparent.

At 7:15 AM August 15th, you have already claimed the dumb comment of the day. WELL DONE! That sound you hear is the crowd cheering.

show us exactly how easy it is to find a #1 or #2 type starter like Joba was over a setup guy???? Were you drinking the sitting water at the playground water fountain this morning??

August 15, 2008  07:44 AM ET

What a freakin mess, by being too carefully they have become careless with how they are bouncing him around. Hope they do the right thing what ever the heck that is?

Field Marshall Sunny Day | 08/15/08, 07:36 AM

As a matter of fact, Captain, he was. Plus, I had sprinkled in some lead-based paint chips before he imbibed.

August 15, 2008  08:17 AM ET

Well put FMSD. Joba was a starter in college and should be a starter in the bigs. Granted he might have to do another stint in the pen but he needs to be the #1 pitcher for the Yankees for years to come.

I don't give a fat frikkin fig how hard or easy it is to find a starter compared to a setup guy. Point is, Joba is a setup guy. That's where he belongs, that's where he shines, and the bottom line is that keeping him in the pen keeps that arm stronger longer. Furthermore, someone needs not only to fill Mariano's spot when he retires, but needs to keep it close to the bar that Mariano has set. Joba is that guy, and he should set up Mariano just like Mariano set up Wetteland, then fill in when Mariano is gone. If it's hard to find a starter with the same numbers that Joba put up, fine. Cashman will be the first one to tell you his job is no cakewalk.

And lord knows with all the frontline starters hitting the market after the season I think the Yankees might just find a 1-2 guy alot more easily than usual...

August 15, 2008  08:37 AM ET

Goodness Gracious Carl Pavano is coming to take his spot.

Umm- no wait, seriously? That wasn't a punchline?

Once again, this is the New York Post. This is baseless speculation with no attribution from anyone in the Yankees organization. When will people, especially New York tri-state area people realize this is not a real newspaper?

August 15, 2008  08:55 AM ET

That's Ok, since they have have until the end of September for the season to end...

It's not like they have to ask him to pitch in the playoffs...

August 15, 2008  08:55 AM ET

Maybe Pavano, Igawa, Kennedy, or Hughes can take his spot....

August 15, 2008  08:57 AM ET

9.5 games out in Mid-August....

Get your lifejackets on...

The SS Yankee is taking on water..
