America's most powerful coach?

Nick Saban has been named by forbes.com as the most powerful coach in America. Saban, with his agent, James E. Sexton II, negotiated an eight-year, $32-million contract that was, at the time, the highest salary ever paid to a college coach. It remains among the highest and is bigger than all but a handful of NFL coaching salaries. His deal includes, among other perks, 25 hours of private use of a university airplane, two cars and a country club membership, extras that make his annual compensation closer to $5 million a year, estimates Smith College economics professor Andrew Zimbalist. He can leave the school at any time without financial penalty, a rarity in big-time college coaching contracts. "What's more, he was given total control of the football program: recruiting, coaching, business administration and public relations. There are coaches at other universities who have similar salaries, like Charlie Weis at Notre Dame and Pete Carroll at Southern California. But no coach, including those in the professional leagues, can match Saban's combination of money, control and influence. Saban, now entering his second year as the coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, is the most powerful coach in sports.

Interesting. This goes to show how desperate Alabama is for a winning football team. They sold their soul to the devil. To give that much power to a man just for football from an "academic" institution? I can understand the school president having such perks...but a college coach? Alabama needs to re-evaluate their priorities.

In addition, he has not proven anything yet. His first year was so so. They were too quick to give him the world. Look what happen to Charlie Weis. After his first year, the quickly offered him a 5 year extension (increasing to 10 years total). But at least with Charlie...he turned the team around to a 9-3 season. But what has Nick done for Alabama lately?

Geez, I can't believe 'Bama didn't spring for a driver for Nick. It's their fault he drove into a tree. This contract took three days to complete because Nick wanted a membership to Winged Foot but wasn't invited in. Then he tried Bay Hill and they countered with Bushwood CC

when it said most powerful ocach in america, I was thinkig this was somekind of competition, but to my disapointment, it's just Forbes making there stupid list like they always do

August 15, 2008  09:29 AM ET

Now hold on there...Forbes didn't say he is THE BEST but most powerful and he is based on what BAMA has given him and allows him to do. He's untethered. The school said to him, "Give us a winning team, that's all we ask."

So far Saban has recruited well but hasn't yet won. Maybe this year? Regardless, he will have to start winning and make progress because if he doesn't, Bama will take him behind the shed and do you know what to him. That is unless another team comes along and offers Saban more money.

Powerful? This article deals strictly with the bucks paid for services rendered, as of yet the money paid dosen't match the performance yet!

August 15, 2008  09:41 AM ET

Now that the numbers are public, which NFL team will up the ante once Saban wins a couple of games ... ?

August 15, 2008  09:42 AM ET

SABAN ****, GEAUX TIGERS!!! IM BACK ....

The Most powerful coach by far no questions asked has go to be....Coach K

Bama will be back - prediction is next year with the last recruiting class they had. LSU and Auburn better watch out they are assembling a heck of a team out there. Power - yes, who else gets that kind of contract? No one.

OK WE WILL WATCH OUT THANX FOR THE ADVICE. WATCH OUT FOR SABAN BEING RAN OUT OF DEATH VALLEY

Not gonna happen since football brings in by far the most $$$ to a school. Money talks and BS walks.

August 15, 2008  10:25 AM ET

Objectively, you have to be impressed with the quality and depth of quality he is bringing into his program. It is LSUesque... I don't think they will be your patsies for much longer. The west is shaping up like the east - a three headed Cerberus.

August 15, 2008  10:34 AM ET

I agree with Go Ugly... thought this article was on Coach K. He has skill & knowledge (which Saban doesn't have) to go along with his power.

August 15, 2008  11:01 AM ET

Well as long as he delivers what Bama expects then this all might be true. Will they keep paying him all this if he does not deliver?

August 15, 2008  11:27 AM ET

Saban is far from the most powerful coach in America. He has never been that. He is a midget pr*ck, who has an ego the size of Russia. But LSU fans thank Saban every day for leaving and allowing us to have one of the best coaches in America in LES MILES!

Saban will only be at bama for one more year. After this upcoming 5-7 season, he'll be in Washington coaching the Huskies. What a sad story. The Bama fans are in love with him like some high school girl, and he's going to dump right on their faces! HILARIOUS!!!!!

4 million a year with no buyout, SMART MOVE BAMA!!!!!!
