Giants GM: Rays should sign Bonds

Giants GM Brian Sabean didn't want Barry Bonds around his team anymore but said "it would be smart" for the Rays to sign the controversial free-agent slugger. In an XM Radio interview excerpted on the Web site mlbonxm.blogspot.com, Sabean said: "I certainly think if he DH'd for somebody, even at this late juncture in the season -- it doesn't take much for him to get ready, we all saw that in spring training, after 10 at-bats he'd get bored. I think it would be smart for Tampa Bay because they are in a very unique position -- as history goes with baseball with a chance to win that division against those two counterparts is pretty amazing." The Rays still don't appear to be interested.

I'll be glad when they finally put this guy in the slammer and we won't have to read these inane stories anymore. The guy's career is over. Give it up already.

Bonds would be a good idea for the Rays. The only other OF/DH I could imagine they would look at as a better option than Bonds is Brian Giles. As a Padres fan I sure hope they don't.

First of all, the guy still has not been proven guilty of anything. He is being blacklisted, while Petite, Gambi, Paul Byrd, Ryan Franklin, Gary Sheffield, Ivan Rodriguez, Tejada, etc. etc. are still playing, despite being admitted steroid users. Bonds does not deserve any special treatment...just equal treatment. Baseball and some fans are such major hyprocrites. Tampa has one shot at beating both the Sox and Yankees, they are stipud not to sign Bonds and if they don't baseball is guilty of collusion (but of course they are allowed to break laws...different standard).

No hypocrite here..........I think that they all and any other abusers should be banned from baseball whether they apologize or not. And also Selig should be tossed out along with the rest of the garbage.

August 15, 2008  09:22 AM ET

Shouldn't Sabean really be thinking about things that will improve the Giants?

August 15, 2008  09:27 AM ET

"First of all, the guy still has not been proven guilty of anything."
But he has been indicted, meaning a good likelihood that significant evidence has been collected.

"He is being blacklisted, while Petite, Gambi, Paul Byrd, Ryan Franklin, Gary Sheffield, Ivan Rodriguez, Tejada, etc. etc. are still playing, despite being admitted steroid users."
These players were listed in the Mitchell Report - not all have admitted steroid use. The ones that have have apologized and move on.

"Bonds does not deserve any special treatment...just equal treatment."
Equal to who? Sammy Sosa had a decent season last year too. Think he could contribute something to some team this year? Where's he? What about Piazza? He have anything left? Palmiero? It's been a couple years but he wasn't completely washed up either.

"Baseball and some fans are such major hyprocrites."
Can't say that I disagree.

"Tampa has one shot at beating both the Sox and Yankees"
Last time I looked, they were doing a pretty good job of it without Bonds.

"they are stipud not to sign Bonds and if they don't baseball is guilty of collusion (but of course they are allowed to break laws...different standard)."
The anti-trust exemption was laid to rest years ago. Besides, they haven't been proven guilty of anything. Who's the hypocrite now?

"I think that they all and any other abusers should be banned from baseball whether they apologize or not. And also Selig should be tossed out along with the rest of the garbage."

Banning all abusers could ruin baseball - there've been a lot of them. But I agree some punishment is in order. And Selig isn't good enough for garbage. Drop him in the sewer.

Sabean never should have signed Bonds.

August 15, 2008  09:36 AM ET

No doubt this is COLLUSION! He can probably still out hit 90% of all major league hitters. Some owner needs to step up and have the gonads to sign him, the Rays would be a good fit.

August 15, 2008  09:48 AM ET

No doubt it is because he is the biggest clubhouse cancer that ever donned a mlb uniform. The Rays would be great for him, but he would be cancer to the Rays.

I think that was Dean's point.

HAHAHA. You're kidding, right? Sosa had a BELOW AVERAGE offensive season last year. Bonds was AMAZING. He was about 23 at bats short of qualifing for the batting title; had he, he would have lead the NL in OBP. Even if you gave him an 0-23, just so that he qualified, he'd still be #1.

You're comparing Bonds to Sosa? 2 cents? Where's my change?

August 15, 2008  09:54 AM ET

"I think that was Dean's point."

And my point was that Bonds hasn't, even after being caught in his own lies.

The last time you looked, did you realized that Longoria and Crawford were out?

August 15, 2008  09:57 AM ET

and coming from sabean (the dumbest G.M in baseball) that means a lot .

Did I say Sosa had a comparable season? What I said was that Sosa had a decent season, and that he could possibly have something left to contribute. No change.

I heard reported, doesn't make it true, that the best thing Tampa has going for it is chemistrey. Hekllo B*nds, good-bye Chemistry

No doubt this is COLLUSION!
coswitch | 08/15/08, 09:36 AM

Definition of Collusion is: A secret agreement between two or more parties for a fraudulent, illegal, or deceitful purpose.

Now you two must be really close to the MLB dealings between team owners and Bud and GM's to know that there is a "secret" agreement with all concerned to be claiming this is collusion. Could it be he's old, can't play OF in a night game and follow it up with a day game. Will probably screw up the chemistry of any team with the circus that will follow him wherever he goes. I won't even bring up the possible indictment problems that may occur before seasons end so you can't call me a hypocrite. Maybe he's just not what any team wants to deal with. So once again...you two really must be tight with MLB dealings to know there is a "secret" agreement to keep him out of baseball? If you are, then what the hell are you doing up here on FN? You should be inside reporters for ESPN.
