Shanahan reunion intrigues Blues
A year ago when Brendan Shanahan was an unrestricted free agent, the Blues' interest in the three-time Stanley Cup winner was minimal at best. Shanahan wanted to remain with the New York Rangers, and the Blues were in the midst of adding Paul Kariya to aid in their rebuilding process. A year later, the dynamics have changed. Shanahan, 39, is again an unrestricted free agent, but his future in the Big Apple is much less certain this summer with the Rangers up against the NHL salary cap. After keeping mum on the topic in recent weeks, Blues President John Davidson on Thursday voiced heavy interest in returning one of the most popular players in club history to the city where he starred from 1991 to 1995. "We've thrown our hat in the ring," Davidson said. "When it comes down to it, Brendan has to make a decision that's right for him and his family. It could be New York. But we hope he explores the Blues as a viable option." The Blues have not offered Shanahan a contract, but they've notified his agent, Rick Curran, of their interest. The team is working under the assumption that Shanahan wants to play one more season in the NHL, his 21st.

Have him commit to a reduction in salary if he wants to play in NY. If not, there's the door my man, have at it......

He may as well go to St. Louis they want him there and he'll make a few more bucks than in NY.

This makes sense if he wants to close out his career with a loser.

What's the point?
At 39 there is no team he can go to and make an impact. His best years are far behind him. He has enough money so why play at all and risk an injury. He has had a great career and won. Who really wants a one year non-impact player either on a re-building team or cup contender?
I ask again, what is the point?

A lot of athletes that play in St. Louis either stay, or return, in any sport, maybe he just likes it there. The fans love him, even if he's only a minor impact at his age, and the Blues were one of the best teams in hockey early last season and are only getting better as the young guys mature. Makes sense to me.

Still can't believe JD is with the Blues. Shanny is a good player but a great presence inthe lockerroom.

Not to mention, the biggest problem with the Blues last year was they needed a leader. Early in the season they came out clicking and playing hard, then at some point they just started to fizzle and you could see the fire wasn't always there (except in games against Detroit), maybe Shanny can provide that leadership and teach the young guys like TJ Oshie.

Baunded,
I've read a few sites that are saying Fletcher has interest to move him to the Leafs hoping Shanny will accept a 'hometown' discount since he grew up in the area. Since the Leafs are in a rebuilding mode, they feel Shanny's lockerroom presence and mentoring skills could come in handy in helping the young guys really learn the two-way and grittiness side of the NHL game. Don't know if there's any meat to this since almost every player is rumored to go to the Leafs at some point...but there does seem to be some logic to it.

Not going to happen. Shanny would take a spot away set for one of the young guys expected to make the team. My nostalgic self would love to see it but my reasonable self says no way.

I think a good fit for Shanny would be Chicago. He could be a mentor and score some points.

Shanahan won't be coming to Toronto..., they're going with younger guys I think this season. Chicago would be a great fit for Shanahan..., he'll get his points on the first or second line and for the younger guys, he'll be a great asset for this club. Chicago makes the playoffs for sure with Shanahan.

Shanahan's best value would be to a team full of young players where he would be a kind of a hands on, on ice coach to them where he can teach them things you can only learn under game conditions. He neither has the wheels nor the strenght to significantly contribute otherwise.

Jables - but don't you think he could help the Blues anemic power play a little bit? I think that interests JD, as well as the obvious interest he could generate in the St Louis fan base. We're talking about one of the most popular players ever to wear the BlueNote

HE would be great in Toronto, especially if Sundin isn't there. They have no leadership at all. I say sign Shanahan and give him the C.

The power play up front for the blues in my opinion is good. Its the blue line we have to worry about. When Eric Johnson is the only reliable guy who can pinch in on from the point and he was a rookie last year and when you have Boyes on the point (whom can't keep the puck in to save his life, thats a problem.
Shanny would be good for one thing: selling new jerseys because everyone here loves him. I say, leave the old guys to the other teams and let Oshie, Berglund and Perron get a lot of ice time.
Shanny may have leadership, but at the cost it'd take to get him here and the ice time he'd take away from the younger forwards, its not worth it. For the PP, you have MacDonald, Boyes, Kariya, Tkachuk, Perron, Oshie, Stemniak and Berglund. Thats a lot of interchangable parts. The PP starts on the back end and unfortunately thats where we have a lot of cash into "defensive" defensemen. Johnson is still young, Wagner spent a lot of time down in Peoria and was hurt and now we have Pieterangelo who is unproven and will most likely be sent down to junior hockey after nine games up. Everyone else we have is worthless when it comes to PP and points.

He should sign with the Penguins. With Sid dishin' him the puck, he'll be one of the oldest to get 35 goals! Pittsburgh Penguins' Brendan Shanahan sounds great!

Paul Kariya is one of my fav's. But I regret him not signing with the Penguins. With Crosby & Malkin, his career would've experienced a renaissance. I still pull for Paul & hope he makes the Hall one day. If not for Gary Suter's cheap shot many years ago, Paul would've been greater.

You make good points, Jables. I'm probably partly looking at it from sentimental reasons regarding Brendan, but I agree....our young forwards need the minutes. Perron I thought didn't get enough ice time last year, but if he shows more commitment to defense, he'll be on the ice more.
He's a leader, though, and the Blues need that. I would be okay with them signing him, but wouldn't be heartbroken if they didn't.

I'll take Shanahan in Deadmonton thank you very much. I know he's not interested but I'd take him. He could sit 1/2 the season if he wanted as well. Save himself for the playoffs.
