Boller, Smith leading Ravens race

Ravens second-year quarterback Troy Smith may have to deliver a knockout performance tonight if he wants to win the the starting job, at least to start the regular season. Reports from Sun reporters in Westminster put Kyle Boller ahead in the three-way quarterback competition but that's not to say Boller's performance has towered above that of Smith or rookie Joe Flacco. If it were a prize fight, you could say Boller is ahead on points and that's why I say Smith would need a "knockout" performance when he gets the start tonight against the Vikings. It could still happen that Smith wins this starting job because head coach John Harbaugh is going to weight the games more than the practices, or at least that is what he has said.

Either way, they'll still suck.

The NFL is a fickle thing. Just 2 years ago (and the 6 or 7 years before than) the Ravens were perrennial playoff contenders. They had the most dominant defense in the game. What happened.... THEY GOT OLD! Age is not like fine wine in the nfl. You get old, you get owned. This same thing may happen to the Pats, Colts and Bolts in the next few years.

Defense wins championships and having a QB that keeps you in the game means a lot. I am not sure Troy Smith is the answer but he beat the University of Michigan 3 times so I think he's damn good college QB. Go Bucks

Hope Troy Smith wins the job.

Team Smith :)

According to Pittsburgh beat Writer Joe Starkey, whom invaded Raven's camp in the "Minst", he strongly thinks Flacco is the man to go with and that he has not been given ample chance yet. Cites guys like Aikman whom were thrown to the wolves right away.

How are the Ravens old again ? On offense they have one old player, Mason, who still contributes. All the lineman are 25 years old or younger. On defense here's their over 30 players: Pryce, Lewis, McAlister, Rolle, & Gregg. Now, besides Rolle, which of those guys still isn't playing at a high level ? I'll take these "OLD" guys anyday on defense and the one on offense too. Plus, Stover is a great kicker, even at 40.

The Ravens D may not be what it was 2 years ago, but it will still be good. Plus, they got lit up alot last year because Rolle & McAlister were hurt and their best CB after them was Corey Ivy, who's not starting NFL CB I can assure you. They added more depth there this year and will continue to do so. Injuries ravaged both sides of the ball last year badly.

That's fine though, I like it when people think their defense will suck like last year, it means they're in for a surprise. Plus, when the D was healthy they put together games like the New England game on MNF, remember ?

Flacco should hope to stay on the bench at least this year. He needs a lot of work.

OK. That QB sucks.

I hope troy gets it...i dont think flacco should start considereing he went from Division 1-AA to the NFL...that would be a bit overwhelming.

August 16, 2008  04:51 PM ET

Here's to hoping Troy Smith gets the job as well.

August 16, 2008  08:44 PM ET

They still don't have a chance, no matter who the QB is.

You better hope not Mr. Steelers fan...besides, no one expects them to be good this year anyway.

At least Smith has some nice upside while Boller is simply a mediocre QB. While Im not a big Ravens fan, I hope Smith gets a chance to prove himself.

Derrick Mason on the other hand actually gets better with age, He runs his routes close to perfection. He and Heap (should he stay healthy) will be the safety net for any Ravens QB.
