Kobe: Knicks can win with D'Antoni

Mike D'Antoni has noticed a reaction whenever the topic of the Knicks comes up around the U.S. men's basketball players. "They usually snicker," D'Antoni said yesterday. "I don't like that too much. That ticks me off." The perception of the franchise is just one of several things on the list D'Antoni hopes to change. D'Antoni is here as an assistant under Mike Krzyzewski, and he's made an impression on the players he's coaching, many of whom believe he's the right man to revive the Knicks. "I think you've got a long list of players that want to play for him, I'll tell you that," Kobe Bryant told The Post. "He's just incredibly sharp. He's a brilliant, brilliant basketball mind. He's going to bring a system and now you just have to find players to plug into that system."

I totally agree with Kobe... we know a lot of great coaches have failed miserably in New York but what makes Mike special is that he has a proven system... so long as he sticks to it and doesn't cave in to the snakes in the garden the Knicks will do just fine.... Mike.. you have come far as a coach..stick to your fomula for success!!!

Brains, system and history are all fine ... but he's GOT to get rid of the bloated contracts and malcontents first. Cleaning up after Zeke's debacle will be no easy task.

August 16, 2008  08:19 AM ET

Ummm..... No he can't

August 16, 2008  08:24 AM ET

Um................I heard Kobe said Bush is just the perfect hight :/ Now that is news a?

Kobe's endorsement will not help the complacency from a bunch of players with no work ethic or committment. Nor will it get Eddy Curry in shape, or make shooters out of guys that can't shoot. This is about as valuable as the prediction from Magic Johnson last year that the Knicks were a playoff team. The game will be played on the court, and if D'Antoni is "ticked off" now, wait 'til the season starts. The Knicks have done nothing that would indicate an improvement over 25-57.

The attitudes on the team has to change first..You can't work with anyone that don't want to take direction..Mike is a good coach but we shall see what he do with these guys.....

Good Call

Hopefully that talk will translate into landing big free agents in 2 years.

Knick fans are sick and tired of hearing about their plans for the '10-'11 season. What makes them think that D Wade, LeBron, or Chris Bosh will want a ticket on this trainwreck? These guys are chasing rings. Boston is as close as this team will ever get to a ring.

what if ben gordon went to the lakers?

August 16, 2008  01:45 PM ET

Who cares?
The Knicks need to fix their attitude problem before they start getting some Wins.

What does kobe know about the Knicks? I agree the new coach is a good one, but their problems are far larger.

the knicks should just get rid of the dead wood i am a bulls fan thru and thru , i miss seeing the knicks compete and be a threat its a shame really, i just hope they get back to where they belong

Everyone says this coach is a good or great coach. I see him differently. I see him as an offensive coach only! What has he ever done that makes you think his guys are going to be defensive? Offense only goes so far in the playoffs! Top defensive teams like Boston, Detroit, and Cleveland will kill that get out and run mentality. He needs an assistant that will stress defense.

I agree,

Why wouldn't someone laugh at the Knicks? They've been laughable for a long time now. Hopefully, D'Antoni can make much needed improvements.

The only thing Kobe said about the Knicks is that D'Antoni is a good coach that can make it work WITH the right players.

So, how much does he need to know about the Knicks to make a statement that most everyone can agree with.
