Jays anger Canadian Olympic team

Canadian baseball legend Stubby Clapp has reacted angrily to the Blue Jays' handling of pitcher Scott Richmond. When asked for his reaction to Jays' demotion of Richmond, who was originally targeted to pitch for Team Canada at the Olympic Games, Clapp stared at the reporter and said: "No comment. No f---ing comment." The nerves of Canadian ballplayers here are more than a little frayed after a third consecutive one-run loss and a 1-and-3 record that sees Team Canada on the verge of being eliminated in the baseball round-robin. Richmond was considered to be one of the stronger pitchers on Team Canada. But the Blue Jays called up the veteran lefthander prior to the Games and sent him back to the minors on Friday night, leaving Canadian players and officials here wondering why the Jays behaved in such a disrespectful manner. Canadian manager Terry Puhl was blunt, but disappointed in the Jays manipulation of Richmond. "They own him," said Puhl. "They can do whatever they want with him. It's like having a car. It's your car. You can drive it whenever you want." While no one will necessarily say it for attribution, and Puhl was trying to prevent his players from answering Saturday, there is a sense on this team that Canada's one major league team should have been more respectful of the national team.

You're damn right they should have been. But even more so they disrespected the player. They took away his one opportunity to be an Olympian - This is just small-class management by a small-class manager and team - they're becoming more like the Leafs.

So..... did Canada really think they were going to win anything?...... They'd probably win the bronze medal in a North American tournament....

Hi FMSD! I see the Phillies are folding up like a 20 year old card table....

August 16, 2008  10:51 AM ET

FMSD, You're right. I would cast Riccardi to play a young Joe Paterno in the movie "Nitany Lion".

August 16, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Yea, the Phils are coming unglued. Looks like they signed Aaron Heilman to pitch for them.

I heard somewhere a theory that says 2 negatives equal a positive. In this case, throw theory out the window.

Well, maybe if it's stubby enough it can't spread the clap.

while i agree the Jays should have let him go to the olympics, Richmond himself was quite happy to forget about the olympics in order to get his shot in the majors.
