Is this the end for Glavine?

When Tom Glavine left Thursday's loss to Cubs after giving up seven runs in four innings, he might as well have handed a baton with "Braves pitching" on it to Jair Jurrjens, who started Friday night's series opener against the Giants. Because it sure felt like a changing-of-the-guard moment to me. Oh, sure, plenty of signs before this indicated that Glavine was probably done, that he might not have enough left in that arm to finesse his way to more wins to add to career total of 305. But long-time observers have learned not to completely count out these wily old dudes -- Glavine, Smoltz, Maddux -- until they're officially done.

?????Can't????? understand?????why? Move him to mid reliever. That's is if he's been "favre'd and he just chan't leave the game.

Glavine is a good guy who has had a great career. But it's about over. We all know it, including him. That's why he came back to Atlanta.

the braves pitching staff is in deep trouble. Hate it for Glavine. Time does march on.

August 16, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Glavine's number one attribute was that he was never on the DL.... ever.... until this year..... if he wants to come back next year it will be for substancially less than $8M and will likely not be guaranteed..... time to retire.....

Not really.... rookies Jurrjens, Campillo and Morton have been solid, even spectacular, at times..... with $45-50M to spend, the Braves can address the other two spots in the off season..... Hudson's injury was a killer though since he'll miss at least half of next year.....

August 16, 2008  10:56 AM ET

LOVE Tommy G! He'll always be one of the best pitchers to have ever played the game...not to mention he's such an amazing role model for all that love baseball...one of the "good guys". It would be so unfortunate for an injury to end his career. He certainly deserves to end his era in Atlanta as a Brave but on his own terms.

August 16, 2008  10:59 AM ET

Glavine was just consistent all these years thats all....same with Maddux...its all you can hope for when ur reaching the upper 30s.....all you can ask for is consistency...

randy johnson is the only 40 something that ive seen some "flashy" stuff if you will...(nasty as well..like that 58 mph curve that caught the batter looking for a strike)..all you can ask for is to be consistent...you dont have any nasty stuff at this part in ur age...now the injuries come into play...he's had a good career...its not too much to retire now...because the braves arent going to win a world series anytime soon..hate to break it to ya smoltz, glavine, maddux...its time to retire and take ur place in the hall of fame...

August 16, 2008  12:10 PM ET

Johnson had a 5 era his last year on the Yankees. His stuff is by no means nasty any longer. His biggest advantage is he is now pitching in the National League and the NL West to boot. If he went back to the AL he'd be beaten like a drum.

"Is this the end for Galvine?"
Sounds like a cliffhanger. =-]

August 16, 2008  01:02 PM ET

Just don't say it's the end for Smoltz. SR is very vulnerable right now. Morning lady.

August 16, 2008  02:24 PM ET

Still think Smoltz has something left but Glavine..., say hello to the HOF. Been a fan of his for years and if this is his last season, it's been a great career.

August 16, 2008  02:40 PM ET

When will they ever learn its time to hang it up.

August 16, 2008  02:41 PM ET

I'm a big Braves fan and a big fan of both Glavine & Smoltz but it's time to move on & shore up the pitching w/new talent. Smoltz may be able to return next year but in a bullpen role. Big fan of Campillo & Jurrjens. Bring up some more new talent to support these guys in the starting rotation next year.

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
Ill never look into your eyes...again

It was over for Glavine before he took the mound last year in game 162 for the Mets.....He should have retired before that debacle.

August 16, 2008  05:22 PM ET

Great pitcher.......time to hang 'em up......

August 16, 2008  06:08 PM ET

Tell it like it is overstates the obvious.
Helen from Keller | 08/16/08, 09:36 AM

Actually, I figured you needed the help.

August 16, 2008  07:19 PM ET

To all the two faced Met fans who to this day beat up Glavine for the last game last year, you didn't complain the whole year when he carried the Mets staff and you kept running an old guy out there and ran him into the ground. Glavine tired his last 3 or 4 starts. He's a class act and he handled that loss with class. Shame the fans didn't do the same.

August 16, 2008  08:08 PM ET

No, the end was a while ago. This is just a farewell tour.

August 17, 2008  08:16 AM ET

Jurrjens is awesome. It was stupid for the Tigers to get rid of him. Look at how he could have helped their rotation. The Braves got a gem in this one.
