Sources: Sundin wants to join Rangers

Free-agent center Mats Sundin has declared his interest in playing for the Rangers this season, well-connected sources have told The Post. J.P. Barry, who represents the elite, 37-year-old former Toronto pivot, has been in constant communication with Rangers front-office personnel this week, The Post has learned, though the conversations have not reached the stage of a contract negotiation. There have been no numbers exchanged between Sundin and the Rangers. We're told Sundin, who recorded 78 points (32-46) last season, has no interest in returning to the Maple Leafs, who have offered him a one-year, $7M contract to re-up. Sundin apparently has negligible interest in joining Montreal, which has been chasing him since February, or Vancouver, which has offered a two-year, $20M deal. Indeed, sources report that No. 13's second choice is Philadelphia, whose GM, Paul Holmgren, has been aggressive in his pursuit of the first-line center who could swing the balance of power in the East.

The Flyer or the Rangers now is it?
Even if that were the case, both teams are up against the cap. Is Sundin that dumb or is he willing to play for a one million dollar deal?
Yeah...maybe so, because Sundin is that dumb!

Hey Baund-ed... don't complain, at least we are free of his cumbersome salary. For a guy that is a mere point a game player, I can't believe teams are tossing Crosby-like money at him.

Good-luck!

i think sundin has a little bit left in the tank, but this thing is playing out wat too long for a player thats going to be 39 this season.still hope he will play for montreal, but not for the money that has been talked about

I really wish this guy would just go away... seriously. In regards to publicity, this is just as bad, if not worse, than having to read about Brett Farve everyday. GO AWAY SUNDIN... GO AWAY!

August 17, 2008  10:46 AM ET

Perhaps Sean Avery passed Sundin his black book.

August 17, 2008  10:48 AM ET

He's not coming to Philly. There's no cap space or space on the roster for that matter. Gagne's return along with Giroux's debut are the only big additions the Flyers are riding on.

August 17, 2008  10:49 AM ET

Why would he go to the Rangers? They're loaded at center.

August 17, 2008  10:52 AM ET

New York eh...I think Mats would fit right in there, after all his head looks something like a Big Apple. What???s up with Glen Sather? He gets rid of one floater in Jaromir Jagr only to chase after another in Mats Sundin. Sather must have rocks in his head since Mats wrote the book on floating.

The Flyers are loaded with centers, too. Columbus needs a 1st line center and is >10million under the cap so maybe they should go after Mats.

August 17, 2008  11:02 AM ET

yeah but you think he really wants to play for columbus? obviously money can't be playing that big of a role here considering he turned down 20 mil for two yrs to possibly play for one of two teams that are right up against the cap. Looks like winning might be at the top of hispriority list.

LOL so much for youth.....

August 17, 2008  12:13 PM ET

No, I don't believe he wants to play there. I only say he may fit in well there (and become the first true 1st line center in the franchise's history). It's indeed interesting what his priority is.

August 17, 2008  12:54 PM ET

If Washington went after him that's where he should go. Playing with Ovechkin he could get 100+ points. For some reason, I think he's going to end up back in Toronto...

August 17, 2008  01:02 PM ET

Roberts#1, watch Backstrom nearing 90-100 points this year...No need for the Caps to bring another center on the board...

August 17, 2008  01:06 PM ET

That's funny. Montreal & Vancover doing everthing to get this guy and he wants no part of them, no matter how much money they throw at him.
I'd like to see him come to Philly or NYR. Bottom line is everybody in NHL wants to play for Flyers and nobody wants to play in Montreal.
GO FLYERS!!!!

Jesus frog on a pogo stick! Not another Sundin thread. I agree with Biohazard, GO AWAY!
