18-game regular season gains support
The NFL adopted the 16-game regular season in 1978, but a combination of factors is likely to lead to a change - and it could be coming quicker than many are anticipating. "The bottom line," said Patriots owner Robert Kraft, "is that I think you'll see us going to 17 or 18 regular-season games in the future." The drumbeat on the issue has been growing louder. In May, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell first floated the idea of extending the regular season. Earlier this month, he mentioned it again to reporters in Cincinnati, this time laying out a reason for his thinking: He believes preseason football is a poor reflection on the NFL product. That's probably music to the ears of fans who don't enjoy seeing second- and third-string players toil in the preseason, while paying regular-season ticket and parking prices to do so. Yet it's not just the poor quality of the preseason that has Goodell and NFL owners discussing an expansion of the regular season. The uncertain labor forecast with players is also driving the discussion. In short, owners feel that too much of their profits go to players. The players don't agree. Expanding the regular season, which would be the fastest way for owners to generate more revenue, is one possibility to help the sides resolve the tug-of-war.

I've consistently said it would be a good idea. With most of the divisions in the NFL full of so-so teams, it will eliminate the opportunity for 6 free wins a season for the perennial competitors.

Hey Smith, then Brady would last maybe three seasons.

Sure Krafty wants an 18 game season - could have had a week to recover after the CHOKE last season.
18 games in the NFL is about $$$ and nothing else. Teams can barely make it through the season now... adding two more intense, physical weeks is crazy, just begging for more injuries.

LOL. Kraft and the Patriots are such LOSERS. I think it is funny that they are honoring last season with rings. It is like saying, Hey Guys, we cheated to go 16-0, looked like a classless bunch of JERKS during that run, and even after, we got OWNED in the SB..How do we show we are good sports for being total cheating, arrogant **** all year?? By celebrating our disappointment by honoring it...LOL. Such class. lol. Ha Ha Ha!!!

Yeah of course Kraft supports it. He is licking his chops to find more refs to pay off to try to get an 18-0 season. lol.
I think the pre season is a joke. All it does is get players injured. If they want their players to practice and evaluate them. that is what training camp and scrimmages are for...
I think they should scrap the international games too. No need for that. The NFL has always been a US game. Other countries are not playing THEIR games here. The NFL is NOT the world league. I do not think we should have other countries supporting our sports when we are not seeing their sports to support them.

#1- You're an idiot if you even go to see a preseason game.
#2-No one is holding a gun to your head to televise preseason football. You decided to do it to generate more income.
#3-You're the ones who allowed players salaries to get out of control by trying to out-bid each other.
#4-What makes you think players will not want extra compensation for playing 2 more games.
#5-You want to generate more income, double the price for advertising during football games. If the network want to barge into my living room to remind me that American Idol is on, let them pay double for it.
PS-I'd pay $20 a pop to get the Redskins into my living room every Sunday, and $5 every Monday to iTunes to download the game. You need to start marketing your product. How many fans do not even get to see their teams play because of the market they are in.

I do think it is broke. I am getting tired of all these over paid athletes staying home from training camp to try and get more money. Less training camp, more motivation for the players to get into camp so they are ready for the real season.

KenoshaMark,
I'm not sure a shorter preseason season will give the coaching staff enough time to evaluate players. As for those veteran players that choose to sit out training camp, they should learn what everyone in the workforce understands......you can be replaced. :|

What's the downside if you love the NFL? More games that count would be great news! The coaches pretty much know which players they're gonna keep before the season even starts. Those veteran players are held out so they won't get injured in a meaningless game.

If they're going to expand the season to at least 18 games, they also need to think about expanding the active rosters too because injuries will rise with the additional games. Another question is whether or not they cut back on the number of pre-season games from four to 2 or 3.

If players are going to play 2 more games a year, that's about a 12% increase in "effort and time," or in the players' union's words, labor. Guess what!!! Agents will be calling for all teams to give their players 12+% raises to compensate for their increased workload. Some players who KNOW they can't stay healthy the whole season will demand an even bigger raise or some kind of salary protection for ending the season on the IR. I don't agree with that point, but it is a valid one. All you'll see is Rosenhaus trying to fight for "the rights of his poor, over-worked" multimillionaires.

One side will argue that there isn't MORE labor being done, since there are 20 games including preseason and that wouldn't change. But players (starters) would argue that they would actually have to prep more for games that matter and therefore demand more money.
