Vikings coach challenges media

Vikings coach Brad Childress acknowledged that he's both amused and annoyed by reports calling his training camp "soft." Childress was considered too tough in his first year as coach in 2006, scheduling full-padded practices on 12 consecutive days. This year, he had the Vikings in full pads four times out of the first 26 sessions, but he feels it's been anything but soft. Childress was perturbed enough to challenge any media member to take part in one of his practices, making reference to author George Plimpton spending time in Lions training camp in the 1960s and writing about it in his book "Paper Lion." No one took Childress up on the offer to sign an injury waiver and join running back Adrian Peterson in the huddle.

Just childress being childish. Silly response. But if this coaching thing does not work out, I think he could be a stunt double in a Indiana Jones movie. Nice hat.

I see his point but it is childish. However, many NFL players agree with Childress and find injuries from training camp and expo or preseason games to be deplorable.Look at the vets and their attempts to avoid the nonsense.

wow has childress been living in the outback or something?

There are times when a man's mouth works independently of his brain......this was one of them. I too wonder why a Viking needs a hat more suited to the jungle than the tundra. Global warming? :)

Childress look like Indiana Jones broke brother..Not a good look,,,He needs to keep his mouth shut...

My lovely wife would be more than happy to confirm this!

"Oh, this is the worst-looking hat I ever saw. What, when you buy a hat like this I bet you get a free bowl of soup, huh?
Looks good on you though!"

Nothing like a Caddyshack reference.

That is a mighty spiffy hat Coach Childress, why don't you buy another one and throw them both out.

August 17, 2008  12:03 PM ET

Who gives a Big Rat's behind about his hat? It's football the Vikings have worry about.

August 17, 2008  12:04 PM ET

The hat may have worked if not for the Dennis Miller on a 4 day bender facial fuzz.

August 17, 2008  12:43 PM ET

...you mean that's not dennis miller?......

I was reading these posts and all the comments sound like Entertainment Tonight's fashion winners and losers. Lets not forget the media ask questions not out of public interest or knowledge but sometime just to provoke. Intelligent, well though out, and knowlegable questions just don't seem to be part of the normal media scrum

childress looks like that old man at the beach , with the metal detector with the sunscreen on his nose...i saw him on this website called CHEAPOLDHAIRYCOACCHES.COM

Didn't look like camp is soft after the dismantling of Balimore last night. T Jackson looked good until he got hurt too...

August 17, 2008  04:07 PM ET

I challenge Childress to make the Vikings relevant for once in their history, but that's not going to happen.

Ouch! Their purple jerseys don't make them relevant? C'mon.

I support the Childress Challenge!!!!!

The media questioned how tough his training camp was. He gave Sports Writers a great journalistic opportunity to test out what they seem to have been knowledgeably writing about.....so that they can speak from experience.

Of course...the media largely consisting of those who would rather sensationalize then investigate and corroborate....turned down his offer. Its much easier to sit back in their room at the local Holiday Inn express...sipping a Latte...and trash talk a team...then to pad up and test the waters for themselves.

One thing about coaches of the Vikings, they seem to find a way to "out coach" or undermine what otherwise would have been a great situation. This year QB is still a question mark, but A.P. is the real deal.

The greatest example of this:

HERSCHEL WALKER

Hopefully the coaches will let A.P. do his thing. Like Herschel, A.P. gets better with more carries/touches. The opposing D gets physically worn down and is constantly worried about giving up the long run. Only home run hitters like Herschel and A.P. scare defenses like that.

If fans of Vikings start hearing "have to limit A.P.'s carries to keep him fresh or injury free" then it's time to find new coaching.

He needs to wear that HAT because he had some spots of skin cancer on top of his head, so now he needs to be able to cover his entire head and that hat seems to be doing the job!.
