Manning in doubt for opener

Peyton Manning had the infected bursa sac near his left knee removed July 14, and he hasn't practiced in the five weeks since. It is one of the cloudiest injuries in sports. I am writing about it because I think there's a chance -- oh, maybe a 30, 35 percent chance if I had to guess -- that the removal of the infected bursa sac could prevent Manning from playing in the Colts' opening game against Chicago Sept. 7. Would I bet on it? Not a chance. At the time of the injury, it was announced as a four-to-six-week injury. Today is the five-week anniversary of the surgery, and Manning practicing is not imminent. If we get a week from today and Manning hasn't practiced, I'd say that's a bump in the road.

I'm probably in the minority. But I think Drew Brees will have a better season. Cream puff pass defence schedule & I think he wants to be the Best. If my man Drew keeps up his pace, he'll be a Hall Of Famer. I hope so! Oh yeah. Manning could retire today and make the Hall!

Lucky for the Bears! It might still be a slaughter but not quite as bloody without Peyton!

Will Peyton still be able to do commercials?

August 18, 2008  08:01 AM ET

The guy is the best QB in football. Period. You do not take chances with someone like him. And they will not.

August 18, 2008  08:02 AM ET

Yes, Peyton will still do commercials, as evidenced by he and Eli's Hungry Hungry Hippos commercial.

August 18, 2008  08:10 AM ET

Whole heartedly agree 50. Let him sit two if that's what it takes. He "is" the franchise.

August 18, 2008  08:27 AM ET

C-Smith..Have not seen the commercials, were they wearing their Superbowl rings in them? Or have the MVP trophies behind them? Just wondering.

August 18, 2008  08:47 AM ET

As much as I don't like the Colts, and haven't since they left Baltimore, letting Peyton Manning sit and heal is the best thing they could do.

August 18, 2008  08:54 AM ET

It is after all PRE season. Not to worry ladies and germs, I'm sure Peyton will be ready to rock and roll come week one.

You had to know this news was just a matter of time. In FF, I would try to get him in the late 2nd round.

Oh well, I guess I start my fantasy season with a back up QB! Damn, I can't even remember who my back up is!

With Payton's own consecutive streak on the line for a QB (who started every game since coming into the league) I wouldn't be surprised if he takes one snap! His ego is that big.

as if any of us in the same position wouldn't think about hobbling in for one snap

I'd even throw down the ball after the snap to stop the clock. =]
