Wild hope to keep Gaborik

Marian Gaborik doesn't need to play in another city to be among the top scorers in the NHL. That was the message Wild management delivered to Gaborik during a four-hour dinner meeting last week in Trencin, Slovakia -- the first step in a journey the Wild hopes ends in a long-term extension to Gaborik's contract before next season. With Gaborik, 26, less than 11 months from becoming an unrestricted free agent, General Manager Doug Risebrough and assistant GM Tom Lynn met with Gaborik on Monday. The two wanted to convince Gaborik, the Wild's all-time leading scorer with 206 goals and 414 points, that Minnesota is the place to be. One objective for Risebrough and Lynn was to prove to Gaborik he's not being impeded from scoring in Minnesota's defensive-minded system.

The Wild better keep Marian Gaborik or they run the risk of looking like the Vancouver Canucks or ....... the Calgary Flames!

All-Time leading scorer is a little misleading. He's been with us since day 1!!!

August 18, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Keep him where? Off the DL?

August 18, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Without him they don't make the post season and they can just as soon change their name from Wild to domesticated. I would have no problem if Cliff could get his mitts on him.

For my money, this is going to be tough to beat as post of the day

I cant see him staying if they wont pay to put some real good talent around him. I think he'd rather play for a run and gun team and build up his own stats anyway.

The Minnesota Domesticated ..... it has a certain ring to it ..... lol

Just like you wouldn't be impeded from getting laid if you were a 300 pound woman with a bad case of acne. Good luck selling that one.

Keep him where? Off the DL?
Spiny Norman

And that's the problem. His salary per season doubles when he only plays half of it.

August 18, 2008  12:08 PM ET

say hello to my little friends the Chicago Blackhawks.....

August 18, 2008  12:24 PM ET

Heres a way to keep him....Get rid of Lemaire and his horrible system and maybe I could acually watch a Wild game... If they keep Jaques around....They have NO chance of keeping Gaborik!

August 18, 2008  01:35 PM ET

Hurt way too often for huge money - can't depend on him being in the lineup. To be a real superstar, you have to stay healthy. This guy should be in his prime, and he is guaranteed to miss substantial time every season for one ailment or the next.

In Gabby's defense however, I would run screaming from the Strangler of Offense (Monsieur Lemaire) and go to a team that boasts an up-tempo game that can fully appreciate Gaborik's talents.

August 18, 2008  01:53 PM ET

I would love to see him in an up tempo run and gun style system. Would be very exciting.

I concur. I'm not even going to try to top it.

Spiny Norman wins. Don't even touch that keyboard.

Oilers - NHI

As a master punster my self, I stand in the oprecesence of brilliance at the Wild/Domestic remark

August 18, 2008  03:50 PM ET

I cant condem the system that made my team competitive again.

bostongm

I feel I must disagree with that theory. It was universally accepted that The Devils, 9and now Minnesota) was boring to watch. Now that it helps your team, you're good with it? So now we'll get every team playing the trap again....

August 18, 2008  03:55 PM ET

Yeah, my bad, Oilers. I saw it, but then forgot about it by the time I got down there. I had grown accustomed to Spiny Norman winning the daily Post of the Day award for the past few weeks, and it was just an afterthought.

All-Time leading scorer is a little misleading. He's been with us since day 1!!!
Lazymike97

Tell me how that is a misleading statement. He has scored more than anybody else in that franchise's history, which means that he is the all-time leading scorer for the franchise. It's pretty simple stats. Regardless of how long he has been there, he has still scored more than anyone else. So no. It's not misleading at all.
